Β It says something about Imperial Rome that the Emperor depicted in Sir Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR (a patricidal, wannabe-incestuous megalomaniac and neurotic) is probably slightly saner than the ACTUAL Commodus, the past master of Herculean cos-play AND Gladiatorial pretensions.Β Β

I love that thing, especially Commodus in his hercules costume, and Didius Julianus with his coins.

Thank you! I love when people reply and know what I drew here!
I have a certain fascination with some aspects of history, especially weird stuff. But regrettably my detailed historical knowledge is limited. These were all done while I was listening to a podcast laying out the history of the Roman Emperors and I pulled up pictures of the statues for reference as I did each one.

Well, if you get the chance, have a read and let me know what you think! It's available for sale as a comic through our website online. The print version has extra strips and a Dramatis Personae section.
I've got plans for a bunch of other stories with Paulus and his friends too.

I'd glad you enjoyed it! I'm trying to get inspired to work on more of these. I've got about 8 storylines I want to do.

Love Trajan and Hadrian, along with Claudius, definitely my favourites

"I, Claudius" really made Claudius into a loveable 'wubby', didn't it?

Yes it totally did!
Honestly I mostly love Trajan because of this really beautiful bust in the Uffizi that I saw last summer, and because he made a really cool column. So my choices are pretty shallow all the way through

Well, from most accounts, Trajan was made of awesome. He was stern and militant, but he kicked ass back and forth along the Roman borders and was one of the "Great" Emperors. Probably why they took such care to make his bust as nice as possible.

Only from a distance. Or looking back from the future. I'd have hated to be a Roman citizen during Caligula's run.

He was funny! He knew what he had to do to make Rome safe and powerful and all that and he knew what he had to do to make himself happy. He didn't give a rat's ass about the senate and what THEY thought or what tradition demanded.
So he was openly gay, sported a beard (starting a new fashion trend) and kicked ASS.

Commodus looks appropriately crazy in his Hercules costume.

Okay, the sketch of Hadrian made me chuckle. Not quite what I pictured for him, but it could work. Interesting little side project you have here.
Does this mean you'll revive the FVLMINATA comics?

I do have plans to revive "House of Paulus", but I can't predict when exactly that will happen.
