About 2 years ago, I saw this and commented that you would be able to paint a picture on the moon later. Well, I just got a job with NASA and we're working on the next mission to the moon to put us up there in 2020. You just might make it in 2050 or so when a base gets put up there.

In the meanwhile, if you're like me and tired of governments working oh so slowly to get you into space, check out these guys and a one Mr. Elon Musk:

Other than that, looking at the emoticon still makes me laugh years later.

Can you bump me up the priority list ;D? Lulz
What will the space base on the moon be used for anyway..?

Thanks for the comment

Refueling rockets that will go on to Mars and for LUNAR DOMINATION!!!! *lighting and thunder* Ahem. *clears away evil* Oh, and science, industry and advancement of technology.

Oh yes, rockets can make it to Mars as they are, but they have to be FCUKING HUGE rockets to do the job to send 1000 kg or so. And FCUKING HUGE = Insane costs. Also, most robotic missions into space were one-way jobs to make them cheaper. Congress would hate to blow another billion just to bring back a tin can with gears.
By the laws of orbital mechanics, the fcuking hugeness of your rocket is dependent on how much payload you're carrying to your destination, where your destination is (you need more fuel the further away it is) and the mass of the planet you are leaving from (more mass, more gravitational force to overcome). In short, going to Mars from Earth is incredibly expensive and needs a lot of fuel because the rocket must carry the weight of the payload, the fuel to get to Mars, the fuel to get off the Earth and carry it all against Earth's gravity.
However, if you were to launch from the moon instead of Earth, it's a smaller, lighter body with less gravity and therefore you can use a smaller and cheaper rocket. All you'd have to do is launch a rocket with the payload and enough fuel to get to the Moon from Earth. It's carrying way less fuel than the rocket above, so the rocket can be smaller and cheaper. Once you get into lunar orbit, refuel the rocket with enough to get to Mars. Once again, there needs to be less fuel because it is not launching fully-loaded against Earth's gravity from solid ground; it's only leaving lunar orbit and fighting mainly lunar gravity (some Earth gravity is in play, but it's not as significant since the rocket is further away from the Earth).
Now the next step is to set up a refueling station on Mars that can refine rocket fuel from Martian soil, and then it's really cheap to send rockets back and forth from the Earth-Moon-Mars and back so we can quit piling up stuff on Mars or spending lots of money to ship fuel to Mars just so we can get back.
If you think your gas bill is high, imagine what NASA's is. >D

Haven't they sent rockets to mars before without a moonbase/refueling? Or.. did those rockets never intend to fly back and were just to deploy the robots and leave them there?
