I always love how you work with shadows.Β Amazing technically (falling across all the various curved surfaces), but they also build the emotion of the piece.Β Love how they fall across her eyes, leaving them darker while the rest of her form weaves in and out of the light.
Beautiful intensity in her eyes, even as they are hiding in the shadows....

Working with the light is every artists aim I think Charles. It enhances the drama and enables you to direct where the viewer looks. The lines show the form, the ins and outs of a flat surface.
It takes so long to learn all these things so it is good when someone appreciates them, thanks.

... which is a very interesting concept for a sculptor. Β
Seriously, I'm pondering how a sculpture interacts with light. Β It's clearly different from a painting or photograph, but if you make certain guesses about the light source when you create the piece, you can definitely play with the way the different surfaces are angled up or down, or how shadows will fall from higher elements to lower elements. Β I'll have to spend more time thinking about that. Β Light is DEFINITELY an important piece of the puzzle when I am photographing my work, both to simply highlight the contours and surfaces, as well as to communicate the emotional depth of the piece.
That being said, you've used your light beautifully here, from the raised pinkie in the foreground, to the deeply shadowed foliage in the background. Β Love the title too.
Blessings!

Interesting ideas could be thought up for the light, you are right. At least you can change the direction it comes from. Once I decide, that's pretty much it for a painting.

I'll have to put up a shot I just did of a piece with a figure trapped in a room, looking up at a window. Β "Proclaim Release to the Captives
Took one fairly normal shot, and it looked good (represented the whole piece). Β sta.sh/01khwih92g9a
Then I zoomed in a bit to only show the upper part of the figure, with her upturned face, and my light source coming from behind the piece, through the window, into her face.Β sta.sh/099ylapt7fo
I'd say it's a different feel to the piece... and definitely makes use of the metaphor of the light...

Yes, I can see what you are trying to accomplish, lighting could make or brake a sculpture.

Thanks, I like your work. A very dark and restricted pallet, then you go and throw red into them. Cool.

Thanks Ralph, gets a bit complicated doing the blending when there are shadows everywhere.

You know, you think you can paint, then you look back after about a year and see how much you have improved. This has happened almost every year. Thanks for noticing.
