I am very new to photography, but I thought that a higher aperture( 11 is high compared to 2.8) created a higher Depth of Focus? It seems this picture contradicts that...

Amazing picture! I really like the DOF, and it is weel focused around the eyes.

graemo In reply to Bellocose [2009-08-17 07:17:36 +0000 UTC]

it doesn't contradict, it's just the macro magnification that makes the difference
the closer you get, the narrower the dof will be

Gorgeous shot of a drosophilia. I wish I had a proper macro set-up!! It's always a sense of satisfaction to get a fly before they do what they do best- fly away. These guys are tiny too.

This has been a fav for a while. However, I just noticed that I had never left a comment.

I just thought I would let you know that whenever I am describing macro photography to someone, I show them this picture.

Macro photography at its best.

It blows my brain out. Wonderful work. Is that a crop or full image? The DOF is a bit too small, though (yeah, i know how hard that is on macro shots).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to Raventhird [2005-09-20 11:41:37 +0000 UTC]

thanks!
it's cropped from 3:2 to 3:4, but i consider this full frame
the dof is not only hard, in this case it's impossible to increase without sacrificing lots of overall detail due to diffraction blur

your macro photography is just plain amazing!

on a side note, i left a sack of oranges start to rot on my kitchen floor, and during last weekends cleaning i moved it and now i have about a million of these little buggers flying all around. i hate them.

seboya [2005-01-27 03:45:00 +0000 UTC]

One of the best macros I have ever seen.
Actually i'm not a big fan of bugs and kinda hate them, but this one is incredibly beautiful.
The shot is near to perfection at least in my humble and inexpert opinion
Congratulations!

This is one of the coolest photos I've seen in ages. I mean, macro photography has always been impressive when properly executed, but the detail in this really blows me away. And, intentional or no, the blur adds a nice diffusive contrast to the more focused head of the fly (which is the important part, anyways )
This really is remarkably well done. Keep up the good work!

Sweet. Transparent flies. It's like a caramel colored gel-button with.. hairs? The shadows almost seem a little too heavy.. and probably because of the blurring. I think that would have been resolved if you had taken more shots with different areas of focus. Good stuff.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

herv [2004-09-22 03:09:47 +0000 UTC]

Very well done. I love the blown out background. Really makes the fly stand out that much more. The DOF is nice too... Even though its extremely tiny, the shallow DOF makes it look just 'that much' bigger. Great work

Excellent macro shot! I like it as is, but if you want to get more in focus, try F22 One of these days when I'm rolling in the money (like that is ever going to happen LOL) I need to get a set up like you have.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to Tazzy- [2004-09-20 17:17:18 +0000 UTC]

"if you want to get more in focus, try F22"

umm, thanks, i know what the aperture does
and especially what it does if you use f/22 with high magnifications, which is major diffraction blur
