Have you read, by chance, a sci-fi novel called Ringworld?
I would not say they are similar to anything in that novel, just the feeling they give is really powerful, and I can imagine them better doing the role of the Outsiders better than the Outsiders in that novel
I will explain myself.
The Outsiders in Known Space (Larry Niven) are the most ancient and powerful beings in that galaxy that trades information and technology. They resemble like eight-whips (cat o'whips or something like that) so, they don't seem really alien. So, my thinking is that this awesome aliens fits much better the position of being very powerful, ancient, misterious, technologically advanced and strange.
So, for me, these aliens are really great and cool
