WOW! That is AWESOME! That is one of the best looking starship designs I've seen in a long time! What programs did you use?Β

FABULOUS !! The orange lines on white remind me another spaceship, i think it was Colony Lander.

OMG!!!

I actually thought it was a real ship when I first saw this. How did you do this? It's so realistic.

I humbly bow before the master.

Thanks
It's actually a really simple scene. The lighting comes from a HDRI light source which simulates a real sky/sunΒ

I don't know what you did to make this look realistic. Its fantastic.

The shadows, the sheen of the metal, the quality, the indirect lighting, the texture, the formΒ of the model, the feel.

I'm some one who wants to make realistic art like this. Do you have any recommendations for a noob like myself?

Thanks for the comment
A lot of the credit has to go to the model maker, for providing such a wonderful ship to work with.Β  Realistic art ? - in my opinion it's a combination of all the things you mentioned.Β  But as a first step I'd recommend looking into HDRI lighting most 3d packages support it.Β

gotta say, the design is SIMILAR to the Escape Velocity NOVA's STARBRIDGE, which is a dual swivel-engine ship, probably a lot faster than this though, and able to enter hyperspace and land planetside, and probably more maneuverability in larger areas where this kind of ship can probably make precision landings exactly, although rather... large.

This is a stunning model and a stunning render. I'm sorry, I hope this isn't bad form, but would you mind saying a little bit about your process for this ? What renderer were you using for example ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GrahamTG In reply to postironical [2012-12-15 14:43:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

The model is by A Axellson - available as premier content from www.foundation3d.com

It's a very simple scene rendered in Lightwave 11.0. I used a HDR image for the light source, background and colouring( Serpentine Valley available for free from [link] ) A large Area light was used to provide soft shadows. And that's basically it. It was rendered with Radiosity and took about 30 mins to process. I set up the HDR enviroment manually but if you have Lightwave, Cinema4D or Modo you can always use SIBL ([link] ) a free plugin/script which will set up everything for you.

postironical In reply to GrahamTG [2012-12-20 04:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the reply. That's funny, I was just working on a project for a modeling class that had me over at sibl/archive for an HDR I needed for the background/reflection of the milky way.
I never even noticed those plugins there. I could have probably saved myself a hell of a lot of time trying to learn enough VRay in Max as opposed to just going with Modo and that.
I appreciate the information and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

My god, this is so beautifully rendered. I'm learning the basics of lightwave right now.... this must have took alot of work to develop. To get those textures right.

Okay take this image, and mail it to the guys who do those crappy movies you get stuck watching at two in the morning....so they know what a Good image should look like.

It looks solid, no easy to spot differences in lighting, the colors look right. ... like i said i wish people who got paid to do CG paid this much attention to their work.
