My brain initially registered the NIV-1 as NAVY-1 (May have something to do with that my Dad was in the Navy?) Anyway, nice concept. Then comes the thought of what a plastic model, or a game miniature, might be like.

To some degree. That is why the crew pod is seperated from the engine and tanks by the long neck.

Wouldn't a nuclear powered ship need some huge radiator vanes to dump waste heat?

This design is a nuclear thermal rocket, all of the reactorβs heatis used to heat up the hydrogen fuel, causing thrust. The reactor is damped when the engine isnβt firing.

In this case its a NERVA thruster, they get rid of the waste heat by throwing it out with the propellant.
