First thing I did to 'test' my new setup was to load and render this in iRay. I recommend a ton of RAM and a decent CPU to even make the attempt (I have 32Gb).

I think that 16 Gb of RAM is really what's limiting you. I found with my old computer that 24Gb is OK most of the time. Now with 32 Gb I really have room to render pretty much whatever I want (it's not rare though that during a render, DAZ Studio hits > 20Gb of use by itself). The only thinks that my computer couldn't handle even with its 32Gb of RAM was the Alter Rock by dglidden. Trying to render this on in 3Delight bombed in less than a few minutes because of overRAM uses, and I'm even not sure that 64Gb would have been enough. Then I realized that everything in that scene used high level of SubD and setting things at base resolution fixed the problem!

That's one of the reasons why iRay is not a viable option when doing graphic novels!

what you really need with 3Delght is sufficient RAM, and a capable CPU. Now with 32 Gb I’m OK, although sometime I feel it’s a little limiting. Also, using AoA’s advanced lighting allows for UE2-like quality with much much shorter render time!

I see what you mean.
My work around for that problem would be to "group" all extras in one group that I would toggle off while working on the scene than toggle on just before hitting render. It can be a little time consuming at first to group all the extra parts, but at least it would make the scene workable.

Sometimes it is useful to render some parts separately and combine it in Photoshop.
But for Harpsburg - i don't know what a super-power-machine is neccessary that it would be possible to work with
