On Rarity finally accept his offer, Spike turns from irritated to instantaneous gentleman, opening the door for her, offering her coat, asking where she wanted to eat, etc. It all made Rarity feel kind of uncomfortable, still. But once they entered the outside world, she noticed yet another shift in mood. Ponies were giving strange looks, turning their noses, and walking snootily past. It wasn’t a welcomed favorite that a pony be escorted by a dragon, she supposed, especially now that he was grown. The pressure made her even more uneasy- what was being done to her reputation? But then she noticed something even more strange. A mother took her young filly and pushed her behind with a shielding arm. The daughter looked confused, but the mother looked frightened. In fact, many of the ponies looked frightened. The more she looked the more doors she saw shutting and the more curtains she saw being drawn behind the dark glass. Lights were turning off, and families started clearing the road or stopping to watch as they passed. “How could they be doing this?” she thought. Then she looked up at Spike.

His eyes stared tired in front of him, and his expression didn’t budge. He stood tall, making it seem as though he saw nothing going on, like it didn’t affect him. But she could see in his eyes how often he’d been through it, and how unused to it he was. He had been through protective training, was a hero of the north, and was knighted- hand taught to guard Princess Twilight herself. But it didn’t matter. He was still a dragon.
