Description
Story time!
"After 30 years of exhibiting captive marine mammals, Northwest Seashows closed its doors to the public, and partitioned out its collection of animals to various parks and scientific institutes. Among those a six-year-old female orca named Kaija was donated to a newly-formed endeavor called Seacross. The aim of the project was to attempt the unprecedented integration of a captive-bred orca into an established population of wild killer whales. A second-generation captive, she was housed at an off-shore seapen some miles from the Midway Atoll, exposed to sounds and sights of the Pacific Ocean (the same ocean her Transient predecessors had been collected from), she came to adapt to her environment. Public donations and private grants allowed her caretakers to keep Kaija safe, raised on a diet of live fish and only-necessary handling, until she came of age before being permitted full roam of the seas around.
The results of her walks have been significantly mixed. Fitted with a tracking beacon at the base of her dorsal fin, Kaija's travels have been logged via remote and firsthand observation. She had been seen socializing with various pods during her venture north. At age fifteen she had reached the Gulf of Alaska, but without any company to be seen. At sixteen she was sighted outside Cook Inlet with a male calf at her side. For the next four years, Kaija doted on K'nai, occasionally seeking the company of other orcas, while still maintaining her distance from people and boats, and appearing - in all aspects - comfortable with doing so.
Seacross personnel, encouraged by this behavior, began to shift focus away from their pending success story to find the next likely candidate. But as word surfaced of Kaija and K'nai being sighted among a small pod known for its rumored 'winged' orca, their attention quickly turned back to see what would come of these interactions."

I really like their linearts here, it's smooth and fits their forms well. I love the colors of the BG, even if it's simplistic. Nice work on the boat and the squid. K'nai looks cute, as usual, and Kaija's lovely. She doesn't look too happy though?

Thank you.
Probably just concerned, like "don't wander off just because you saw a cuttlefish, now".Β K'nai has always beenΒ one to follow his curiosity, be it good or bad.

Thank you.
Compared to my empty-sea BGs, this is quite a lot of detail. I aim to include more of that in my art this coming year.

Hopefully it's just the start of a whole bunch of other vignettes to be strung together.

It started with a simple updated list - I've already reworked the names and roles of Aves' podmates, including new characters. Stories need some antagonists, after all.

I had a pretty big obsession with them my entire child hood due to the free willy movies and going to sea world all the time I loved to paint them in art class in elementary school .

Same here. The FW movies were some my most re-watched VHS's.Β Growing up inland,Β orcas and dolphins and whalesΒ seem so exotic.

Cool story! Where'd the little dude come from? Is he hers? Who are these new orcas? I'm really interested now, and hope you do more with this story. The image is lovely, too. The characters are beautiful and I love how you painted the light and shadows. I'm especially impressed with that boat hull! Boats are difficult to draw, and you did such an amazing job on the little details even adding propellers!Β

Thank you.
It's a story I've had in my head for a couple years now,Β two side characters for the intended story of my winged orca, Aves. They have existed in various iterations (always as mother and son), but with this image, I'm starting to tack down their official backstories. That's the intent, anyway.
As for the boat, I kinda winged it. The recent seasons of "Deadliest Catch" with their underwater cameras have lent a lot of reference. :3

You're welcome!
That sound like a really cool story. I'm excited to learn more about these two and Aves.

Likewise, I'm excited to work on them. One thing seems to lead to another. Even if I never make a proper comic, these vignettes seem doable.
