Description
Hands down my favorite character from Deep Space Nine. I've been working on this on and off for the past few days. I tried to get as much detail in it as possible, but most reference images are really low quality. I'd love to hear what you think of it. (and don't forget to look at the fullsized image!Photoshop CS5.

That's stunning! I like the 'painterly' treatment, and all the different hues and tones you've used to create shadows and highlights. One of the best Damar portraits I've seen!

I must say I was blown away by the magnificent detail in this piece. I like this character too although Garak was my favorite Cardassian. You've done a much better job here than the makeup artists of this show. It's still my favorite of all the ST series , so I don't hold that against them.
I just found your gallery and have to say you are very talented. Plus, thank you for artistically immortalizing lesser known characters. Bashir was my least favorite yet your portrait beautifully captures his character's evolution. Well done!
I hope that one day you might feel inspired to create a portrait of Worf, my all time favorite character in both DS9 and NextGen. That would make for an excellent print.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I love painting lesser known characters. I've watched and re-watched star trek so often, and during those times you start noticing how these characters bring so much life and diversity to the series.
I'm definitely gonna do Worf soon. I love that guy. I nearly cried when they announced that Dorn wouldn't be on the new series because they wanted to under pay him. The man is epic.

Oh you're so welcome! I couldn't agree more, that exactly why I keep gravitating to it after all these years. I have many "re-watchings" under my belt (LOL!) and always seem to notice new details.
And of course, I agree about Worf. Mr. Dorn created that character from scratch in NextGen, and one of the reasons I love DS9 so much, is that we get to know him so much better once he joins in.
I'm so excited to hear that you would consider painting Worf one day! Yay!

Hey, thanks! I think it took me about 10 hours? I always paint at night and I don't really keep track. But the skin texture took so long haha!

Wow... real good. I also like how him truns from an arrogant, low ranked officer to a mad alcholist, and than a real national hero.

You are welcome. Yes, he is an interesting personality. You can hate him in one episode, and love him in another. But i newer forgive him the killing of Ziyal.

Astounding, perfect, wonderful. I'm officially swooning and I'm not even sorry . But in all seriousness: his features are spot on and the colours and lighting make for an particularly interesting mood that suits the character very well. Great job!

I love Damar. And I love him that much more because at first I hated him. Such a great complex character (which in general is what I love about DS9). This is a great likeness of him--my only criticism is something looks slightly off about the lips (I think Casey Biggs' mouth is a little wider). Other than that, spot on.

Yes the lips...you have no idea how many times I re-worked them. I actually had to use the transform tool to make them wider, because initially I painted them even smaller. His lips are obviously messing with my brain But I can see that they're still a little off. I might overlay the reference these days, just to see what's going on. Thanks for the constructive comments!

I think it is really sad that all the images from DS9 are poor quality! It's really hard to draw them. But we have to make some drawings to get something beautiful at our walls especially this one...
lovely job!

I have tried to make stills of the show, but that doesn't work either. We'll just have to continue to draw and paint.

I'm completely impressed what you can do with digital art nowadays. The underlying texture looks like canvas.
The colour gradient from dark blue to brownish gold works well. As well in the background as in Damar's features. The eyes and the mouth are great. As are the structure of his skin and the modelling/shading of the scales. Perhaps the only thing worth a bit improving (and only if I'm really looking for it) is the grey part underneath the right nostril (his left one).
Beautiful portrait.

GrayscaleArt In reply to Dahkur [2014-11-12 15:48:21 +0000 UTC]
You are so right about the grey part below the nostril. It's funny how you get so caught up in a work, that you develop a blind spot for certain areas. That is the only downside to digital work in my opinion, you sometimes forget to zoom out and look at the whole.
Regarding the canvas texture, I added a secondary texture that resembles canvas to some of my brushes. Not all, because that would make it looks artifical. Thanks again for your insight!
