Very helpful. But I do have a question: How do you know where to place the muscle lines? Even with a reference, it seems like I go overboard and misplace them.

Awesome work!
Two things that bother me are the elbow and knee areas. I always figured the knee joint was further down..
The olecranon process in the elbow also troubles me, sometimes I forget how far it extends. For a period I just drew a big flab of muscle covering that area... I got my horse to lunge at a walk and filmed that. After studying the video I found that the muscle only covers it in in the phase where the leg is really far back... It just goes to show that studying your subject is really important, I know this tutorial will help a LOT of people! Thanks n__n

Oh, gosh, for the longest time I just could not figure out the hip, gaskin and hock, and then I bought this giant vet book with lots of drawings of the bones and ligaments... I remember the exact moment it clicked. Definitely, studying is essential!

Yar! I remember when I figured out the elbow. I'm working on a muscle reference for horses though, it's a great opportunity to crack this knee confusion once and for all o__o

<3333 Will definitely help with traditional!

x3 i'm so much better at digital than traditional because it's soooo much easier to erase, and it doesn't make me as frustrated because then it doesn't have any sign of it ever being there. lol.

I always draw a skeleton on the horses I'm drawing to help me with those angles, very helpful a lot of the time! I find those hind legs and shoulders hard to get the right shape. Nice, simple, helpful tutorial!

I must not draw circles, I must not draw circles, I must not draw circles.
I think that might be part of my problem.

Very helpful! I'm looking forward to part two!

Greatalmightyqueen In reply to LittleShadow73 [2010-06-13 22:01:30 +0000 UTC]

Don't feel bad--lots of people do it, even though true circles aren't found anywhere in the animal world, except eyeballs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LittleShadow73 In reply to Greatalmightyqueen [2010-06-13 22:08:29 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess even in the eyeballs, they are not completly circles, well at least when you draw them.

This is an awesome tutorial! It makes it a lot easier to draw realistic horses.

Random question, what thickness brush do you use? It looks really good, not to thick, but not too thin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Greatalmightyqueen In reply to MelonHeadGirl [2010-06-13 18:26:23 +0000 UTC]

That depends on the size of the document, but in HARPG I usually work 1500 pixels across, with a 10 pixel brush.

MelonHeadGirl In reply to Greatalmightyqueen [2010-06-13 18:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh, okay. Do you know what the size might be with 1000pixels tall? That's the size I usually work with.
