Description
Jace walked into the kitchen of the Institute to find Isabelle digging through the fridge. “Don’t tell me you’re going to try and cook something,” he said as he walked past her. “I thought we learned a long time ago that you couldn’t cook.”

“No,” she told him as she closed the refrigerator. “Just heating up some leftovers. You want some?”

“Nah. I’m not really hungry,” he explained as he grabbed an apple. He threw it up in the air, caught it, and then washed it off. He then took a bite of the apple before asking, “Have you seen Clary?”

“I think she went to her room,” Isabelle told him as she pushed the buttons on the microwave. “She said her arm still kinda hurt from the demon attack. Why?”

Jace grimaced when Isabelle said Clary’s arm hurt. It had been his idea to go looking for demons. “Oh, I just needed to talk to her about something.” He took another bite of his apple.

Isabelle leaned back against the counter in front of the microwave. “Are you sure you’re not hungry?”

“I’m fine,” Jace told her around another bite of his apple. He quickly finished the apple, and left the room.

He headed back to his room and changed clothes. He put on a clean, white t-shirt and his favorite pair of pajama pants before he grabbed something off his night stand and headed to Clary’s room.

Clary suddenly woke up to the sound of her door shutting. She pushed herself up on her elbow and peered into the darkness. “Hello?” she whispered. Nobody answered. “Jace? Is that you?”

“Who else would it be?” someone suddenly said from right in front of her. “Scoot over.”

Clary scooted over on her bed making room for Jace. Jace would often come to her room to spend the night, so this was routine for them. She heard the rustling of fabric as Jace shed his shirt and then she felt the other side of the bed sink from his weight. The next thing Clary knew, Jace was under the covers and lying on his side next to her.

He cupped her face in one of his hands and traced her cheek with his thumb. “You feeling OK?” he asked before kissing her forehead.

“Better. My arm’s still a little sore,” she told him as she snuggled closer to his bare chest. She took a deep breath, loving the way he smelled.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered into her hair as he wrapped his arms around her.

“Sorry for what?” Clary asked as she pulled back some to look at where she knew his face was.

“I’m sorry that you got hurt because of me,” he told her.

“Jace-”

“Clary, it’s my fault so don’t tell me it’s not. If I hadn’t been so stubborn about attacking those demons, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt. I’m supposed to protect you. I don’t ever want to see you hurt.” He ran his thumb across her cheek again. “I failed you. I hate apologies, but I would hate them even more if I had to tell you how sorry I was that you got hurt for the rest of my life.” He let out a sigh. He was always amazed at how much he opened up to Clary.

“Jace, I’m not going to tell you that it’s your fault. I don’t blame you for it. Everyone makes mistakes, Jace.”

“I don’t,” he said, then thought better of it. “At least, I usually don’t.”

Clary rolled her eyes even though she knew he couldn’t see them. “Jace, you’re not perfect.”

Jace didn’t say anything in response. He just kissed her forehead again and buried his face in her hair.

After he didn’t say anything for a minute, Clary said, “We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” She kissed the place where she knew his birthmark was on his collarbone.

Suddenly, his lips were next to her ear. “Clary, you are perfect.”

“Jace, I am not perfect.”

Jace traced his lips along her jaw to her lips making her shiver. “You are to me,” he whispered before pressing his lips to hers.

He kissed her tenderly, showing her how much he loved her. After a minute, they broke apart.

“You’re just saying that,” Clary said.

“Am I?” Jace asked before capturing her lips again in a more passionate kiss.

Clary moaned softly and brought her hand up to cup his face. As she did so, she felt pain shoot up her arm. She gasped as she pulled away from Jace.

“Damn it,” she gasped at the pain.

“What?” Jace asked confused.

“My arm. It hurts to move it,” she explained. She felt Jace move beside her.

“Hold still and close your eyes,” he told her.

Clary did as she was told. A second later, her eyelids turned red from the light that now filled the room. She slowly opened her eyes, blinking as they adjusted to the sudden light. She saw Jace was sitting up next to her and looking down at her arm. She followed his gaze to look at the purple bruise on her arm. Jace reached over and softly ran his hand over the bruise, and then bent down and kissed it.

“How do you do that?” she asked as some of the pain in her arm faded away. She sat up and leaned her head on Jace’s shoulder.

Jace laughed softly as he wrapped his arms around her waist and drew her closer. “I just have that effect on you.” He kissed her again before saying, “There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”

Clary looked up at his face and noticed that his expression had turned serious. “Ask away,” she told him.

Jace tightened his arms around her and buried his face in her hair and took a deep breath. He let out a shaky breath as he pulled his arms from around her waist.

“Clarissa Morgenstern,” he whispered, “Since the day I met you, I have belonged to you.” He pulled a small black satin box out of his pocket and opened it up. Inside the box was a ring had one diamond with an emerald on either side of it. “Will you marry me?”

Clary gasped and looked up at Jace. He was looking into her deep emerald eyes as she looked into his gold ones.

“Yes,” she whispered as she brought her hand up to cup his face. She kissed him before saying, “Yes,” again.

Jace let out the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He carefully picked up the ring and slid it onto Clary’s finger. He leaned in, kissed her, and then said, “Thank you.”

Clary looked up at him in sudden understanding. “Did you actually think I was going to say no?” Jace looked down at her hands. “Jace, I couldn’t say no to you. I love you. I always have.”

“I know,” he told her as he sighed. “I just don’t know what I would have done if you had said no.”

“Jace,” she said as she pushed some of his golden hair out of his face. “I would never tell you no.” She kissed him for a minute before saying, “I love you.”

Jace rested his forehead against hers. “I love you too.”

“Clarissa Morgenstern,” he whispered, “Since the day I met you, I have belonged to you.” He pulled a small black satin box out of his pocket and opened it up. Inside the box was a ring had one diamond with an emerald on either side of it. “Will you marry me?”

Clary gasped and looked up at Jace. He was looking into her deep emerald eyes as she looked into his gold ones.

“Yes,” she whispered as she brought her hand up to cup his face. She kissed him before saying, “Yes,” again.
