Sunny and Sides might not be old dogs at war (like Ironhide and Kup), but out of all the warrior/soldiers models still activated, they probably were some of the more resourceful.
In the image:
This battlefield was lost, but that didn't mean they could let the Decepticons win all.
Sure, they would need to be separeted for a while, but they have done it several times before. What could possibly go wrong?
PS: I like to think Sides and Sunny were continously separeted while they worked as front soldiers, for several reasons; 1) because they can cover more ground once separated, 2) because they would probably be a handful to their CO; and 3) because they are like children and any interaction would quickly deteriorate to namecalling and prankd if left in the same platoon.

Sunstreaker wanted Sideswipe to go first because the people trusted him! Sunstreaker's introversion worked against him...Imagine if it had been the other way around!

Sides would have been separated from all society, having to survive with few resources available...
Sunny, meanwhile, would have been surrounded by teammates but he'd have still felt as alone as sides!!

It's a good story though! But I wonder would had been like if Sunny and Sides had switched places where Sunny is looking for Sides and Sides is raising Hot Rod......

I really like Sideswipe's attitude about the battlefront it is quite funny and the phrase what could possibly go wrong is the worst thing to say becuase saying it means something will go wrong

Okay I really, really, really, love the twins as you know and I love your art style but in this, the expressions are so awesome and so telling. I hear that exaggerating expressions can get the point across more so in animation or something like that and I think it goes the same here. I love the dialogue. They are legitimately thinking as one, being two halves of a spark, ya that would happen and you get this sort of interaction. The first panel of Sunny is just amazing. So much emotion and so telling. I love how you shoot each pane. Im sorry I'm totally gushing right now but I can tell so much love went into this. I think the twins are so sanitized to the bullcrap and heartache of war they can talk so nonchalantly about it like this. CO is dead well crap what now sigggh. And their main focus is to get mechs and femmes out of the battle and back into safty. If that's not noble I don't know what is. The twins are just amazing overall characters and a lot of mechs, especially higher ups don't take the time to understand them, where they came from, or what they do, or understand their bond together. But of course in war when can you do that with each of your soldiers. Just...so lovely as always and I cant wait for the second part.

yes, I exagerate the expession a bit...considering they are supposed to be made of metal makes it even funnier..
yeah, I like to imagine that they think alike, finish each other sentences, have similar dreams, and simply act as one mech that inhabits two bodies.
I like the first and second panel the most, (because for one second you might think Sunny is alones, and then the next frame rolls and of course Sideswipe was sitting beside him" ;D)
And yeah, the rest of the autobots might not like the twins that much, but the twins love the rest of the autobots enough to try and save them... and isn't it sad that the higher ups can't understand them??
