*claps hands together* Hyenas time! Had some ideas for semi-canon hyenas bubbling up while doing research on comics and short stories, so I switched over to working on them.

- Thabiti is a younger hyena, he joined the clan very early in his life during the beginning of Scar's reign, and was always one of the lowest raking submissive males. His passiviness allowed him to stay relatively scar-free, the few light bites and scratches he got staying hidden under his pelt; being one of the few hyenas to have come from other clans he has much less vitriol towards the lion pride he shares space with, and is often put off by the cruelty his clanmates exhibit.
He mostly patrols the borders on his own or with another male, so how did such a low ranking male get with the matriarch? Well, towards the end of Scar's reign Shenzi was in a bad spot; the Pridelands were becoming worse than the graveyard, the clan was growing restless, Scar didn't care and she was in the middle of all of it. She started taking partols on the kingdom's outskirts, the lesser, more quiet zones (replacing some of her lower rank goons in the zone) and eventually she crossed with Thabiti; she was quick to snarl at him and he was quick to turn around and go the other way, but after this happened a couple of times he started patrolling with her, keeping a respectful distance. With the passing days the distance between them would shorten more each time, and eventually they'd be walking almost side by side during the patrols; Shenzi found that she didn't really mind his presence because of his quiet attitude and Thabiti felt surprisingly safe around the much bigger, dominant female. After chasing off some mangy rogue they even started making small talk, and eventually Shenzi started confiding some of her troubles and struggles with him, who'd share his opinion and point of view.
Shenzi even goes out of her way looking for him to spend time together after the patrols; this attracts the attention of Banzai, who goes protective big brother mode and attacks him (how dare this piss-poor male court his sister??), only for her to jump in and give him a trashing, with Ed laughing in the background.
They have Asante two seasons (one year) before Simba returns and everything falls apart, quickly replacing his joy of becoming a dad with the dread of seeing a good part of the clan buring in the flames or dying to lion claws; he knew he wasn't strong enough to fight, so he focused on getting hyena cubs out of the fire, and even help some of the lion cubs (the lionesses weren't thrilled about a hyena helping them, but they knew Thabiti was on the mellower side and they needed more mouths to carry the cubs out).
After the return to the graveyard all he can do is try and be as supportive of his mate as possible, and a good father to Asante; Shenzi's death a few years down the line is a big hit to him, but he tries his best in supporting his daughter and her decision to move the clan away, the rest of his life is spent comfortably helping her rule over the clan in their new home.
Ho ho ho, what do we have here? A completely original character as Shenzi's mate? Yes, yes we do. He's based on a hyena that appears a couple of times on the Timon & Pumbaa show, clearly not an outcast among the animals of the pridelands... but that would probably make him at the bottom of his clan instead (Listen I just liked the design ok). I didn't change much because I liked his colors, I just tried to make him look less like a Banzai clone; his daughter inherits some of his markings as well.

- Asante's life was rough from the beginning, starting in the decrepit Pridelands of the end of Scar's reign, to the graveyard when she was still a cub; despite this she grows into a spunky and sarcastic young hyena with an open mind.
She befriends Kopa, the young prince after he saves her from a snake, and she saves him from drowning in a river later on; the two spend as much time playing together as possible while still keeping their friendship a secret, however eventually both Nala and Thabiti find out, they agree to let their children still meet and play together, but on the condition that the pride and clan must never know, for their safety (Simba still wasn't in the mindset to allow hyenas in the Pridelands, especially not from Shenzi's clan). Being one of Kopa's closest friends, she's the one he confides to when he starts thinking about running away when he finds out he has to marry Timira on top of becoming king; being a young and seeing the distress on her friend's face, Asante encourages him to leave.
Her mother's death happens when she's a teen (after already loosing her uncles Banzai and Ed), the title of matriarch has long since been rescinded to Asante's cousin (Banzai's daughter/Janja's mom), but she still keeps the clan in the graveyard, firm in wanting to go back to live in the Pridelands, Asante on the other hand is tired of seeing the clan suffer and wants to relocate it, to do so she needs to become matriarch; so she bides her time until she can't stand the situation anymore, and since she can't convince Kukoroma to migrate, she challanges her to a mashindano. Despite being barely a young adult, Asante manages to scrape by a victory, earning a huge scar on her neck, the respect of her cousin and the title of matriarch; after a long search she manages to win over a small but lush territory to rule over, and tries her best to get the clan to respect the circle of life like they did before Sheria (no hunting for sport, avoiding kids when possible, the water hole is a safe zone).
Look who I finally got around to design! Asante is such a known, popular character in the fandom that I wanted to do her justice (and also, any character without a set design ends up taking me longer to decide, also I needed to have her dad designed); I gave her traits both from her dad, and from her grandparents, she especially gets blue eyes from Sheria/Shenzi and leucism from Banagi (yes I'm retroactively giving him leucism), tho it's kinda low-expression on her.

- Fisi is a sleezy, cunning bastard, while his dad was from another clan, he was born in the elephant graveyard, thus growing up stewing in the hate for the Pridelands the clan has. He's one of the bigger troublemaker the lionesses have to deal with during Scar's reign, constantly harassing both them and the herds. He got to the upper ranks of the clan by fighting dirty, hading out favors, reaping on debts and reporting to the matriarch and Scar any insubordination or discontent. Fisi ends up well-regarded among the loyalist and hated by the more unfortunate members of the clan; he may not be the prettiest, but his cunning earns him the attention of the next matriarch in training, Banzai's daughter; the two get together when they're young adults.
In the fight for Pride rock he is part of the big fight, but when the fire start getting worse he retreats, still he partecipates in Scar's murder, and gets his backside burned by the fire; he's still on the luckier side when it comes to burns and ihaling fumes, tough.
Fisi firmly supports his mate when it comes to wanting to reclaim the Pridelands, and often sneaks in trying to cause trouble or to steal food alongside his brother in-law Jake; he's quite skeptical when Kukoroma decides to go along Asante's plan but ultimatly his loyalty wins over his cynism. When it comes to his son Janja, Fisi is quite proud of the boy, but after he opposes the matriarch and openly direspects his mother after she loses the mashindano, he isn't particularly fussed about him staying behind; leaving the home clan is a hyena tradition for young males anyway, and their clan had been discouraging it for one too many generations (it's what led to the clan's overpopulation).
Last we have another audiobook character, Fisi! I made him Janja's father and the mate of Asante's cousin, sort of part of her family circle. His design is based partially on the surprised hyena in the "luau" sequence, and his colors are adapted from a hyena sprite from the genesis games (since his name is literally "hyena"! it made sense for his design to be inspired my a generic copy-paste enemy). I love his muzzle shape, he looks like a grumpy old man even as a youngster <3 The burns were something I tought of while thinking about the fire in Pride rock, surely some of the hyenas that survived would be affected, plus I wanted to give a character a bald tail.

As for how Shenzi, Banzai and Ed die: they're roughly all the same age as Scar (with Shenzi being slighly younger), so they're quite old by the time Simba becomes king. Banzai is the firt to go, he inhaled quite a bit of smoke during the fire and it permanently ruins his brething, he manages to see his grandkids but dies shortly after of brething complications. Ed dies a few seasons later from old age/organ failure (mostly lack of food) and Shenzi follows soon after for the same reasons, plus depression (feeling like she's failed her clan + loosing both of her brothers). Yes it's sad but I don't really see it going any other way

This was finished yesterday, but I knew I wanted to write a lot for the description so I waited until this morning to post it, they're all already on the family tree + some updates.
As a warning the demo for MH stories 2 is about to come out and it's basically the first few hours of the game, and the progress carries over so I'm probably not going to be able to focus on drawing like, at all.
