Curches and other Christian buildings was allways build with thick walls and heavy protection. It was to protect the ones in need and to create a small world of peace, incase of war then all the people could escape into a church and defend themselves and protect the children and such. Thats why they have battlements.

It's a sanctuary, from war and strife and other stuff, so of course it still needs protecting. Inside is peace, but not always outside.
