This painting explores the question: what vital powers can be found in humanity’s artistic legacy? Shamanic motifs including crystals, mushrooms, and a human-animal hybrid circulate movement throughout the composition. The seated figure is modeled from Michelangelo’s Lorenzo de Medici sculpture, and the face is reworked as an idealized portrait of Michelangelo himself. What is the relationship between the two central figures? With Michelangelo as representative of the Renaissance and the lion-figure representative of a more ancient shamanic power, the two are suggestive of an age of rebirth and transformation.

This theme is ornamented with the famous nebula, the "Pillars of Creation," photographed first by the Hubble and recently by NASA's WEBB telescope. Our cutting-edge technology is capturing visions of light from the distant past, offering perhaps inspiration and guidance for our future.

The side panels unfold through symmetrical patterns constructed from the principles of Islamic sacred geometry. Within these designs are woven motifs of light and renowned Paleolithic talismans. The left panel shows the “Lion Man”, among the earliest known sculptures in the world, 36-41,000 years old. It was found in Germany and is made of mammoth tusk.

The right panel shows the “Venus” of Willendorf, an archaic sculpture about 26,000 years old, exemplar of female goddess figurines in Ice-age Europe.

Resonances between these different eras and regions, with emphasis on archaic art from humanity’s deep past, are explored with the guiding intuition that keys to humanity’s survival and success in our global civilization can be found through a renewed Renaissance of our archaic, shamanic origins.
