Flown by Capt Ellis W. Wright. Based at V Fighter Command headquarters, Dobodura, New Guinea, May 1943. Wright earned his wings in 1940 and was stationed in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. He joined the 49th FG in late 1942 as 8th FS operations executive, often flying this colourful P-40E. He transferred to V Fighter Command as assistant operations director in March 1943, by which time he had three confirmed victories to his credit. On 11 April 1943 Wright shot down three Zeros in a single engagement while defending shipping at Oro Bay, taking his victory total to six He rotated back to the US in June 1943, but returned to combat during the Korean War.
