Description
Sensing that their new SB2C Helldiver might be a dog (which it was in our universe), the folks at Curtiss Aircraft Co invited the infamous Prof. Anton Veeblefitzer, bug-eyed creator of so many weird designs, that when he attends air shows, the pilots and guests fled!
Anyway, when presented with the Helldiver plans and mockups, PAV exclaimed: "Step aside Well-Meaning Men (WMM)! Observe perfection becoming even more perfected, perfectly, perfect!"
The result was the Scout Bomber Curtiss Veeblefitzer SBCV-1A "Outstander"!
PAV built the machine around the new Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radial engine, rated at 2,000 hp for takeoff, and 2,250 hp emergency power.
The propellor was a Veeblefitzer-Hamilton Above Standard MK-2 four blade which pulled the Outstander to speeds exceeding 315 mph, when unloaded.
Armament was fearsome! 4 X .60 cal heavy machine guns were wing mounted, and two .50 cal mg were positioned in fuselage PBY-style glass bubbles just aft of the wing. A third gun could be mounted to defend the Outstander underside, but this was hardly used, as it tripped up the gunner, when he had to jump from gun to gun.
The landing gear retracted backwards, as in the Curtiss P-36/P-40. This left space for two external bomb/fuel tank mounts, placed below the inner wing. Two more external mounts were placed under the folding wing.
The Outstander was designed to carry the Veeblefitzer Armaments Complex, VAC, "Shipkiller" 1,500 lmb delay fuse bomb, which proved deadly to any ship that it hit, and could cripple an enemy vessel with a 50 ft near miss! On the wing mounts, the Outstander could carry a combination of fuel cells and bombs.
As illustrated, the Outstander featured not just folding wings, and folding tail planes! This increased the aircraft carriers "Deck Load Potential" by 24% !!!
Pilots commended the craft for its performance, cockpit/canopy visibility factor (CCVF), armament ("You could use this wonderful beast like a fighter!" Announced pilot Capt. Joshua Smilodon, the commanding officer of the USS Hampton Roads (CV-7.5) famous squadron, the "Devil Dolphins").
The Devil Dolphins greatly aided the the civilization-defending American Platonic Republican Forces (APRF) fighting, from their point of view, a wicked enemy that wanted to consume them alive, like sushi!
