Description   In  August of 1942, the British Empire sent 6,000 Canadians across the English Channel to invade the French seaport town of Dieppe, as a rehearsal for a full-scale invasion of Europe, later in the war.
Operation Jubilee, or the Dieppe Raid, as it was titled, was an unmitigated disaster (please see Wikipedia "Dieppe Raid" for details.)
Critics claimed that the botched raid was a deliberately designed disaster, in order to convince the Americans, that a cross-channel invasion was impossible in 1942.  Why?!  The evil British Imperials wanted to prolong the war, in order for the Russians and Germans to bleed themselves white!
  How cruel and evil!!!
However, Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, Snowballs Prize winner, 18 times, in the category of  "Wildest Aircraft Ever", was, also, a talented strategic thinker, who showed a plan, for a potential, early, victory in west Europe, to his friend General Dwight D Eisenhower, who by chance, happened to be the Supreme Allied Forces Commander of all Allied Forces in the European Theater of Operations.
Prof. Veeb' proposed to General Eisenhower that Operation Torch, the planned allied invasion of north west Africa, instead be redirected to invade and establish "possible permanently-held positions capable of defending themselves, and to be used as bases for offensive missions, with American air and naval power for support." on the west coast of Europe.
General Eisenhower agreed with Prof. Veeb' especially after looking at the hundreds of new weapons that were suddenly being made available, as if out of thin air (hee-hee).
Three such new weapons were the Veeblefitzer/Grumman F-4-VF-6 "Bobcat" fighter, Number 1.
For details on this wonderful craft, please visit said illustration and description, on this site.
And, Number 2,  the Veeblefitzer/Douglas VDA 124c "Ulysses" was a great improvement over the original Douglas SBD/A-24, Dauntless-Banshee design.
The Army Air Corp' A-24 Banshee came equipped with the reliable Wright R 1820-60 9 cylinder radial engine, that put out 1,200 hp, and which could pull the Banshee to a speed of 255 mph.
But the mischievous elf of alternate universes, Professor Anton Veeblefitzer  PhD (Mad Sciences), after procuring a bunch of SBD's and A-24's, tore off the old engines, and bolted on, instead, his new redesigned Wright/Veeblefitzer 1820-120, 18 cylinder engine, which was two -60's mated, rated at 2,400 hp (!).  This new power plant could pull an unloaded A-124 to speeds nearing 400 mph!
The weapons load of the old A-24 Banshee was 2 x .50 cal mg's housed in the upper fuselage, ahead of the pilot. with one, or two, .30 cal mg's placed in the aft part of canopy for defense. Offensive Bomb-load max was 1,250 lbs.
The "Ulysses" , however, came equipped with 4 x .50 cal mg's in the wings, and  2 x .50 cal mg's for the radio/navigator to operate.  And the new machine's  bomb-load was nearly double that of the old A-24 !
Next is Number 3, the famous Veeblefitzer/Grumman A-27b "Victory" attack-bomber.
Prof. Veeblefitzer took the Grumman TBF-1 "Avenger" torpedo bomber, and removed all naval equipment, including the wing folding system, which reduced weight, and the inadequate Wright 2600 engine, rated at 1,700 hp for takeoff, and replaced it with the more powerful PW-R 2800 engine, rated at 2,000 + hp.
The TBF's armament consisted of 2 X .50 mg's, one located forward of the pilot, and one placed in a rotating turret aft of the canopy.  A .30 cal mg, for defending the craft's underside, was placed in a fixed turret aft of the bombay.
Offensive armament was usually 1 X 2,000 lb "Bliss Leave-it torpedo (which had a bad rep', hitting the target, but not exploding!), or 4 X 250 lb bombs, etc. .
Prof. Veeb's teem tossed all the original naval gear, and fused the folding wings into solid pieces.
As well, for firepower, he replaced the old turret with a larger Bendex unite equipped with 2 X .50 mg's.  2 X 20 mm Oerlikon
cannon were wing mounted. The most interesting aspect was the turret placed just behind the bombay, armed with 4 X .30 mg's.  This turret could be controlled by the top turret gunner (crew was only two, while the TBF had three) and proved deadly in strafing attacks, being able to put up a hail of bullets as it left a target.
The Victory bomber excelled as a ground-attack vehicle, plunging deep into enemy armor and troop columns, as they attempted to dislodge the American invasion, of Festering Europe.

Pictured is an actual photograph of USAAF Victory and Bobcat aircraft, strafing and parachute-bombing Wehrmacht Panzers and soldaten, as they attempted to counter-attack the beachhead established by the superior American forces.
