Description I usually try to give at least some anecdotes surrounding the making of any of my doodles. I won't do that this time because I really don't want to explain this one. It's very personal and I don't have yet the emotional distance necessary to discuss it openly. Maybe in a couple of months. I just hope you like it for the time being. Thanks for looking!

Edit: Wow! Wow! Wow! Daily Deviation... This is so cool but I feel kind of bad considering the above text kind of makes me sound like a pretentious jerk trying too hard to be mysterious, so I guess further explainings might be in order. Who knows, it could even be therapeutic. As a couple of you might have guessed the girl in question is Andrea [link] , a girl I was very deeply involved with until not too long ago. She was very special to me and even though the break-up wasn't nearly as bad as those things can sometimes get, I still felt pretty awful for a while. Not gonna get into the bloody details here, suffice it to say that the thought of her didn't exactly cheer me up at the time so when I posted this I really didn't feel up to dissecting it any further.
This drawing was actually made about a year before all this happenned, during a previous mini-breakup (we had a tempestuous relationship to say the least). I often used to tease Andrea about these two polar opposite sides to her personality, one which made the happiest man alive and the other that could terrify me with just a glance. This drawing was about those two sides of this remarkable person who's now so far away from me.
I'm extremely happy to see so many people whom I've never met connecting with it on some level. it's one of the greatest joys someone making these kind of things can experience. Many many thanks to all those that left a message, your kind words mean a lot to me. Thank you so much!

Reminds me a lot of a Frieda Kalho (spelled that name right??) painting. It does quite a bit, actually, although she tended to use colour a lot and this is in black and white. Very spooky-feeling and definately seems to have some sort of emotional secrets and stories trapped within its grey and black walls.

Much congrachulashons on ze DD! Muy buena, baby.

The picture seems to be made up of unsaid things and sadness, like the two in it has so much to say and dont know how to say it and its tearing them apart. Them being nude shows their vurnability. Great work.

I don't understand it, but i can surely appreciate it, if not fully (: I look forward to your explanation when the time is right
The Orchid (the Vanda miss joaquim in particular) is our national flower so anything that features orchids incites in me a silly sense of pride hehe
Gorgeous detail on the hands by the way, the bone structure looks so real!

Orchids are Singapore's national flowers? That's so cool! I'll definetely have to go there someday now. I don't know what previous message you were referring to, but thanks for leaving not one but two comments in any case. They are most appreciated.
I added a half-assed attempt at an explanation in the description in case you still care to read it.

I can't seem to understand I can you called such a masterpiece like this a "doodle" .... really I can't... it's beautiful and it's very sharpen. The shadows are superb and the concept (although you don't explain it) hit you like a bullet... it's just fabulous, and it's not because it's a DD it's really beacuse it's worth it ...

I only wish I could fraw like you...

I think I can safely say that my unconvincing attempt at false modesty has backfired, so I will refrain from calling it a doodle ever again. i don't even really know why I phrased it that way. Thank you so much for your comments, I'm glad you liked it

wowa how many hours did it take u ? is it from your mind?

greysmith In reply to bethfairy [2006-06-14 04:35:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I started writing to say that it was indeed from my mind and then I realized that the girl did pose for me. I think I used a reference photograph from a biology book for the iguana and i drew the orchids from an actual orchid plant than I had nearby. The polyhedrus was crappily lifted from from Durer's Melancholia. So, in all honesty only the table and the glasses were entirely imagined. It took me about a two weeks to make, but I worked on it on and off.

It's creeping me out loads. Aside from a disturbing amount of realism, it looks like some of my nightmares. Plus it could be interpreted as having personal meaning for me, too...
