It was agonizingly painful to watch.

The way he continuously twitched and jolted, brows furrowing with anguish and distress, heavens knows what fumbling and melding over in his mind as cries for help slipped past his peach-tinted lips. Almost every day a nightmare of his occurred, and despite him telling you to allow him to fight through it, you absolutely had to shake him awake from the depths of his darkened memories. At the moment, his fists clenched the blankets by his side, as he progressively convulsed more and more, shouts echoing off the walls.

"No! No! I-I'm sorry! Pl..." he trailed off into a state of subconsciousness before jumping back into his horrified state. "Please listen to me... N-No... NO! NO! STOP! NO!"

"Eren, Eren," you said softly, placing your hands on his shoulders and shaking him gently. "Wake up, please," you whispered.

His lids snapped open, revealing a pair of glittering emerald orbs, flecks of amber and sapphire buried within their depths as they flitted about to survey his surroundings. Chest heaving with the efforts to get oxygen, his hues finally landed on your concerned and worried expression, blinking a few times to grow adjusted to the feel of awareness. Dragging his tongue over his dried incision-laced lips he murmured your name softly, breathing deeply as he propped himself up on his elbows.

The atmosphere settled into one of silence, thickly hanging in the air as he stared down at the sheets with a look of shame written over his features. This continued for the next few minutes, your breaths the only sound audible besides the wind knocking harshly on the window alongside the bed. Taking a deep breath, you gave him a weak smile before finally murmuring, "You're doing better. I only had to wake you up once tonight." A heavy sigh passed his lips as he sat up, running his hand through his messy chocolate tresses as the blankets fell into his lap to expose his bare chest. Knitting your brows together with unease from his unusual silence, you scooted closer, cupping his face in your palms and lightly tracing the lilac crescents beneath his shining emerald eyes. "Is everything okay?" you hummed.

His hues met yours as he nodded slowly. "Yeah, I'm fine... It's just... They aren't getting any better," he whispered, fear steadily creeping into his bright orbs. "I can still hear them screaming, crying out for help, and I can see the blood, I-I can taste it, and I feel that adrenaline and rage and the screams-"

"Shh," you murmured, dropping your hands to his shoulders and trailing them to the back of his neck. "None if this is your fault, alright? Don't put the blame on yourself."

"But-"

"Eren, listen to me," you continued. His anxious gaze still lingered on yours, you could practically feel the waves of hope and faith towards you emitting off of him. He depended on you so much without admitting it, and you honestly needed him just as much. You kept him sane, cooled him off when he was at his boiling point, and most importantly, was there for him at his most vulnerable moments. "You're going to get better. I promise you will. You just need time-"

"How much time?!"

His stare bore into yours, one filled with desperation and exhaustion. You knew he was tired of having to pretend to be happy, you knew he was tired of waking up every night with sweat skimming his brow as a horrified emotion settled in the pit of his stomach. Delicately brushing his tousled locks from his shadowed features, you let out a hushed, "I don't know..." His eyes lowered and a sigh blew past his lips as he set his forehead against yours, gently pecking the tip of your nose. "Come on," you murmured, "Let's try to get you back to sleep, okay?"

Exchanging a hopeless glance with you, an almost sarcastic smile adorned his features. "You know I can never fall back asleep after a nightmare," he whispered, shaking his head and causing his locks to tickle your cheeks.

A quiet giggle escaping, you pulled away and grabbed your pillow from behind you. "Not really. Watching the moon makes you fall asleep, right?" you retorted, placing your cushion to where you faced the window.

Laying beside you, he hummed softly in agreement, wrapping his arms around the soft pillow as he rest his chin on the plush surface, staring out the window towards the serene and tranquil sky above. You rest your head against his shoulder, watching the stars glitter in company with the brightened moon. Soon enough, his gentle and steady breaths signaled him being submerged into his own little world, hopefully a good one. And soon after, you followed in his steps.

Later you understood something, a simple statement that had just occurred to you. He was your moon. Radiant, determined, passionate, strong, and yet all of that pride would disappear into its weak spot, only to reappear just as bold and courageous as before. You would be the sun to his moon, balancing each other out, embracing each other in your most vulnerable states... All you had to do was glitter with faith.

Just like the moon.
