Description
Looking down on Earth v2A random splash scene from my comic project Shrike - References to Humanity.
This is a remake of an old image I did four years ago:
Since I did that, the appearance of this character has been better established in a host of other images. Looking back I was also not happy with her expression nor with many things related to the reflection and the distance to Earth. She's in free-fall now, the window is flat-surfaced and the view of Earth is much closer.
Whereas the old image was used as a base, a lot of this was re-painted from scratch. Didn't use MyPaint last time, did so now (together with an ample use of GIMP).
At least I think it looks better. Comments appreciated as always.

A well-executed picture and an improvement on your previous one. The colour scheme is quite harmonious and even the intense reds are so well placed, that they do not stick out badly. Some parts of the rendering on the figure are quite good and remind me of old sci-fi book and movie poster illustrations, a retro feel which I find to my liking.
I would prefer a less smooth rendering of the face to go with the rendering of the hands. Maybe it is a matter of taste but I feel that some clear distinction between colours and the planes of the face would make the image more dynamic and enhance the old-school feeling. However, this may be me.
Anyway, great work! Carry on!

Thanks for the feedback, I wanted to have at least some off-reds in all that blue-green, good it's not taking over too much.
Hm, I see what you mean about the rendering of the hands being sharper than that of the face. I'd probably be more inclined to go the other way - soften the shades of the hands rather than of the face (especially since the rest of the image is not as sharply rendered as is the hands). It's worth to experiment with a bit though. Thanks for the input!

She definitely does not look happy..
I really like this painting. The execution is very well.
By the way, what's up with that comic you mentioned in ur first painting?

Thanks!
This is an excerpt from one of my several comic projects yes. And no, this one is not readable anywhere.

Only time will tell - I don't have much time to regularly spend on them and a comic takes a lot of work.

I am not sure if we are looking out from the inside and seeing her reflection, or if earth is behind us and we are looking into the room. The frame of the window appears to vary a lot. I would assume such a frame would be machine made and thus very exact and the width and thickness of the trapezoisd holding the glass would be very similar. I am also not sure about the lighting. The reflections/highlights suggest a light source from the top left. If that is the case then i dont understand why there seems to be a thin white outline on the right body parts. Am I missing some secondary source or did you add that so it is easier to distinguish the body from the starry background?
Please never stop making these. I am having great fun giving feedback on your always so detailed and inspiring work!

Thanks for the comments!
It's a rather tricky thing to establish inside- or outside without modifying the image quite substantially (one would need to add some sort of outside reference maybe). I have made some changes however, establishing the outside colours a little more on the "walls" in the lower part of the image.
I'm not sure how you establish the light coming from the upper left, the character's highlights are either facing forward or is the effect of diffracted light through the window (as far as I can see)? Good point about the bright outlines though, it is a way to easier make the character stand out, but it's not really needed. I have toned it down a bit now.
Take a look, hopefully better now. And thanks again!

Beautifully drawn, definitely an improvement. Great anatomy and lighting.
May be it's just me, but the face looks a bit weird and contorted, because the placement of the eyes, ears and especially the mouth suggests an angle different from that shown by the head and the chin.
Also were the highlights on the thighs intentionally pixelated? I presume it has something to do with the interference from whatever she is inside.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you like the anatomy, I've had some doubts about that myself (more in the previous version than this one, but still).
The idea was to put her head at an angle (she's indeed not looking straight ahead), but I think I know what you mean. Her mouth is also deliberately contorted into a scowl. Maybe it confuses just where the planes of the face are. Hm.
The entire suit has a sort of lattice structure that breaks up reflections along its surface. It's possible the lower screen resolution this is displayed with DA is confusing the issue - there are a lot of details here that are not really coming across all that well. If it just looks pixelated and weird then it might maybe be better to have the surface be simpler to read better...

Well they are not totally pixelated but the edges sure look like they are.

I have slightly changed the texturing on her legs, to confuse the eye less. Hopefully better now. Thanks for the feedback!

Could you explain the back story to this image? It's beautiful, but the disdain/disgust on the characters face and her body language have me a bit confused. Also, your coloring has greatly improved, however unlike the original one I can't tell if she's inside or outside. You say she's in free-fall, but from the image I can't quite tell why.

Maybe it was meant to be weightless environment, instead of free-fall. I don't blame you for taking the author's words... On that account i do not know if she is in a floating or free-falling vessel? But i would place my bet on weightless. Let's see what Griatch says to that.

Griatch-art In reply to dihitsu [2012-11-18 01:59:55 +0000 UTC]
It's both. A space station (which is where she is) is in "freefall", which in turns leads to "weightlessness". The two terms are interchangeable in this context.

Hi,
Like the original image, this is a semi-random splash page from an unpublished comic. There are captions in the full version, which describe things more. In brief she's not scowling over Earth, really, but about something she's thinking about.
The free-fall is visible rather subtly, mainly because her hair is floating about her and the fact that her feet are not actually touching the floor. Either that or she's in the process of jumping up against the glass.
It's interesting that you find it hard to see what is inside and what is outside. Guess the previously curved surface of the window made that clear. I tried to have the earth-light colour the walls on the sides of the window, but I wonder how one could further make this clearer with a flat window ... any suggestions?

Ah, okay. Well, looking at it again, it seems part of the reason why I have trouble interpreting the image is that the subject looks transparent; the stars seem to be shining through her rather than on her. Maybe making the environment behind her look more prominent and the stars less prominent. It's hard to say since I don't know what a reflection and light like that would look like exactly. That's the only idea I can muster at the moment.

Griatch-art In reply to Missvirginia [2012-11-17 19:54:04 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for elaborating!
It's actually the other way around, she is behind the window, and the window reflect the stars. She is not transparent more so than the diffused Earthshine in the window partly obscuring her. Making her surroundings clearer will establish direction, but also make it unclear that there is a window between her and space (I've tried that) ...
I have made a few changes to the window and also added brighter Earthshine to the walls in the lower part of the image (check it out), but I think one would need to add some more structures outside in order to further establish direction - and I'm not quite willing to change the image that much. Thanks for the feedback, very useful!

It looks really great.

It's based off a photo, hard to get all those little variations right otherwise.
