Description
This is an experimental snippet named Level Up, out of another comic project of mine - Shrike - References to Humanity. This is a little slice-of-life snippet that has no real point or purpose on its own; See this as a snippet in the middle of a longer sci-fi story, so there is no formal introduction of the characters, just dive in. This is page 1 out of 3.
Next page >
Art-wise, this contains a lot of experimentation. It makes use of a slew of open-source programs:
Makehuman - character prototyping
Blender - character perspective, simple lighting reference
Krita - art placement and some brush background work
MyPaint - Almost all painting work
Inkscape - Text and bubbles
GIMP - cloning, cropping and various manipulation
Original concept is over a year old, finalized over a few days.

I'm very interested in the pipeline...
The colors ant the chiaroscuro effect are very interesting, reminding me of Caravaggio (sp?).
However I feel that the rendering "taste" taints the images slightly.
By the way, the thumbnails look very intriguing.
Did you make a paintover over the rendering or did you eyeball your image?
Otherwise, a very promising visual style with excellent, atmospheric coloring.

The rendering "taste" is a tricky side effect of this style. It's difficult to get rid of it and make character look "alive" and not computer generated. More experimentation is clearly needed here.
The pipeline is that I first plan the comic on MyPaint's infinite canvas. I then use makehuman to make two nude characters. Makehuman is easy to use but it doesn't output particularly pretty characters. I then import those into Blender to make a scene. In this case it's a very simple "stone" object for them to sit on as well as an upward-facing light source to help with the shadows. I then pose the characters and save renders of the various needed poses and light reference.
I then load the renders into Krita (which has a better move/rescale tool than GIMP) and place them in their frames on page. This is very rough at this point, I cut and paste and move characters around relative each other and the page. This rough we next load into inkscape for creating the text, bubbles and frames. This is needed so as to fine-adjust the position of images and know just how much space is needed, so this process is a back and forth between Krita and Inkscape.
Once this is done, I have all text with very rough imagery. The characters are also naked. So now I hide the text and paint over the whole base image, using the poses and the 3D shadows as reference for the features but actually painting over it. Things like eyes are important for life, makehuman tend to create rather ghastly characters out of the box I think. Finally all components are combined together and fine-adjusted.
Hope that answers your question (sorry for the delayed reply).
