Except the non-canon ones. This info came from a non-canon children's book novella.
The writers said in a Q&A panel the IDW comics were the only semi-canon material. The novellas were completely non-canon.
The Hubworld summaries said she is the genetic-grand-niece of Celestia, just like Blue Blood. Only the non-canon novellas said otherwise, which were made for little kids by the marketing department, not the writers. Its as canon as Pink Celestia.

Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell
Princess Cadance is featured in the chapter book Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell.[7] The book tells the story of Twilight Sparkle after she'd been made an Alicorn and seeks advice on being a princess. She turns to Cadance, who tells her life story, how as a baby Pegasus she was found in the woods by Earth ponies , who took her to their village. When she grew up she reversed a love-stealing spell cast by a pony called Prismia. Prismia wore a magic-enhancing necklace that amplified her evil and jealousy, but when Cadance confronted her, the necklace amplified Cadance's love. Once Prismia changed her horrible ways, Cadance was surrounded by magical energy and transported to a strange place where she met Celestia, who adopted her as her royal niece.

I could be wrong but I think Faust stated she had originally envisioned Cadence as an Unicorn. The change for Alicorn was made at a later date mostly for marketing reasons.
So (if the book is to be believed) she is a Pegasus turned Alicorn. Originally though, she was intended to be a simple unicorn.

Never thought of this actually! What about Celestia and Luna, if the used to be unicorns (maybe even Pegasi), who made them into alicorns? Perhaps Starswirl the bearded?

I suspect you don't really need someone's help to undergo the transformation into Alicorn. It might just make the process easier. Or maybe it doesn't even do that.
Maybe Celestia just keeps on an eye for ponies undergoing the transformation and when one does, she goes there to offer council.
