Description My Medauroidea extradentata, stick bug is laying eggs now. I saw 3 had already hatched so I let them be there with mommy while getting rid of the other eggs. Not planning on getting 10,000 stick bugs :'D Pinne usually sits on my screen while I animate.

TINY BASTARD.

I heard you can use them as fish food. Maybe your goldfish might eat them. It seems like a waste to just throw them out.

My Bio teacher said that fish can eat the eggs of at least the Indian variety but you might want to do just a quick check on your species to be sure. She said that a lot of people feed them to their betas, which are a sensitive species, so their probably good for the much hardier goldfish.

I hope you didn't throw them in a trash can.... because then they'd hatch and take over you're house ._.

Thats a Medauroidea extradentata, not an Indian stick insect
Indians are smaller and dont have any horns. Nice photo by the way

No problem, kinda surprised at seeing a stick insect on the front page today, i keep and breed tonnes of them along with mantids and all kinds of bugs

:'D Aw yay another bug lover! I had a mantis once, they are amazing, I love how they seem so intelligent when they move their head around following movement.

Having had a gecko, I also ended up keeping a Zophobas morio beetle, because it escaped and I found it weeks later ready to turn into a beetle. 8D and then one day this beauty popped out <3 [link] I had it for 4-5 months, I cant remember excactly. But it was cute.

Lol i kept them before as well years ago before i had my main insect collection at home. Kept them at my nans house, once they turned adult they pushed the lid off and she found them all over her living room floor lol.

And yeah, i tried giving mantids up a couple of times, i really wanted to breed them but i had terrible luck when mating them. The males werent getting eaten, they were just too dumb to mate and died of old age. I keep end up getting them though cause they act and look so amazing

i have always wondered about bug joints
they are really cool and i find it so strange to see their legs
bending when they look really rigid

this is a really neat picture though
i love how you captured the length of the mother
and the little baby hhh so cute

I used to think these were very creepy insects, until I saw this photo. It's just so.....obscenely cute the way the mother and baby are looking at each other. I hope to encounter one in the future so that I may get over my slight fear. I hope you put up more pics ^^

Love it. We used to have 11 species of stick and leaf insects. Was fun but they have a tendency to breed. Luckily escapees tend to go up the walls where they're easily spotted.

AsjJohnson [2013-02-13 20:04:14 +0000 UTC]

huh... it looks a bit creepy in a way. So much like a piece of wood. I think the little walkingsticks I used to see outside are prettier, in my opinion. It might just be that I've never seen an Indian stick bug, so it would take a bit of getting used to. ^_^"
It's kind of interesting about them cloning themselves like that. I guess they're often too far apart to mate in the wild or something? What are you going to do with all the eggs you want to get rid of?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

griffsnuff In reply to AsjJohnson [2013-02-13 20:32:41 +0000 UTC]

you crush the eggs, or they will hatch outside, which isnt a good thing. Not that they would hatch out in this cold.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to griffsnuff [2013-02-13 20:48:19 +0000 UTC]

seems kind of sad to have to kill them, though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

griffsnuff In reply to AsjJohnson [2013-02-16 14:30:17 +0000 UTC]

Its better to end it before they hatch, I think having a cage with thousands of them is worse than ending it before they get that far.

Also, where can you get them? I always wanted a Orchid Mantis myself. :3

spray the tank once a day so they get fluid. but you can easily read up on this if you use google xD

You usually get them in pet stores or buy eggs from breeders

scythemantis In reply to Prisipls [2013-02-14 04:14:27 +0000 UTC]

But how? They're only animals with a different shape, and covered in neat, clean little panels of natural armor. They're orderly, tidy and whimsical, like little robots or aliens, and all do the most amazing things. Only a tiny handful of species can even harm or bother you in any way, either.

I can think of nothing in the world more beautiful and wonderful than "bugs," they're practically all that make Earth an exciting place...they do make up most animal life as we know it, and all other life would die without them

Nobody's saying that, but there's no reason to actively hate a sweet little living creature

I love everything, though, even things that bite me. They're all just other species, surviving the only way they can, and make the world exciting!
