I am actually really loving this picture, not merely because of the colours, but because the surroundings, filled with whatever it is (bird crap?) makes it look like a tiny world with gigantic mushrooms.

It sort of reminds me of a set of books my mum had when I was young about these mice that lived in tree trunks. You could see tiny glimmers of light from the outside, but on the inside they were vastly detailed little houses.

Hehe, it's great it brings back memories for you. I've always found little woodland scenes like this quite enchanting. When I'm walking around there I often just stop and look a mossy trunk or fallen tree for a while. It's good from a creative point of view as well, soaking up details and storing them away somewhere. My old art tutor always used to say that drawing or painting is two thirds observation

I think all the little bits are just decayed wood and fungus. This was on the side of a standing tree that had lost quite a large limb from near it's base.

I think that drawing is mostly about observation, followed by interpretation and skill.

An old art teacher of mine told me once that the best way to view an object you are trying to draw is to look at it from three different perspectives:
1. As if you were far away from it, like a bird in the sky to see the general shape, shadows and highlights
2. Normally as you would usually look at it from ie on the table in front of you so that you get a good rounded view
3. Extremely close up for the details and textures

I find this to be really pretty good advice, and while I have not done any still-life for a while, I think its worthwhile. I like it especially when doing digital painting of landscapes and such, because I start off with very basic shapes and colours, then get the shape more refined until nearer the end where i add more detail and texture. I guess some training we never forget.

That's crazy... I'd love to see some colorful fungi in person like that one day. Cool shot.

Thanks . I always take things like this for granted and forget that not everywhere has fungi growing

An amazing colour! From their positions, its as though they threw themselves forwards to make sure to be in your shot.

Thanks Sue. They really did stand out, especially as it was under quite a thick part of the canopy and therefore quite dark and green.
