I've never seen one of these before, let alone in my garden, but there it was sitting on a flower this morning so I grabbed a couple of shots. It's pretty big, about 5 or 6cm across the wings.Related content

That is some moth! Never seen one like that and didn't realise we even had such exotic - and large - varieties in the UK.

If I ever see one, I'll probably be too busy doing an impersonation of a girly squeal to even think about getting the camera out! Although, I've been drooling over the superb macro shots posted here [link] to the point where I think I'm beginning to get less squirmy about even spiders, lol.

oh geez! that thing reminds me of the freaky-ass giant moths I saw in south america, like, the size of your head O.o
(alright so most things are bigger than the size of one's head in south america, but still, MOTHS! nwaarr)

Yeah, there are some monster moths around the world
This one turned out to be quite friendly - I went back this afternoon to check and he was still there so I stuck my finger near him and on he crawled. It looked bigger perched on the end of my finger, I guess he was a little over 2 inches across the wings and about an inch and a half in body length.
