Description
You were right. But then again you've known me for a long time ;DI was having a major 90's trip and this image came to mind- I remembered my fondness of a couple that weren't necessarily made a compatible couple in the official storyline... but I fancied their union. I don't know if I was ever so obsessed about any other pairs and to this day I don't know why. I was in high school so... maybe the reason could be summed up with just that lol.
They're not together because of an unrealistic level of forgiveness and new-found love from Lara-Le. They're together because after hundreds of generations Locke was the first Guardian to be a tad rebellious- since he adamantly refused to treat her like some sort of Guardian incubator. It was necessary for Locke to give Knuckles time to be a Guardian on his own so that he can develop some self-reliance, but Lara-Le didn't need any such thing so... he visited her often in secret.
Eventually their ancestors learned about Locke's deviation from the Guardian laws. When he debated they had him exiled instead of considering his words of reason. Sabre was quietly empathetic towards his son- he even had suspicions long before Locke was caught, but chose to say nothing about it. But since Sabre was compelled to follow the rules (for the sake of tradition and believing that all their rules ensure the safety and strength of Guardians), he grudgingly escorted Locke out of Haven.
So then Locke become a Rogue Guardian
So anyway... before I rambled I meant to say that... the reason Lara-Le wanted to leave Locke in the first place does not exist in this alternate reality. So that is why they are together. The difference between eternal love and eternal solitude depends a lot on some of the simplest things- letting the love of your life know you really love her/him and making selfless sacrifices or taking a stand against something that is not right for her/his sake.
Honestly I thought of Locke as being a true but somewhat defiant Guardian of the Brotherhood. He has a heart of gold and he doesn't let crap like tradition get in the way of thinking rationally. I think of Sabre as someone who wishes to be as bold as Locke, but is afraid to.
That's the way I see them. If you don't like it I don't care, but I dare you to make me
(I think Locke is to blame for me having a thing for hooded characters 9w9)
ATTENTION PURISTS : I am aware that in Archie Sonic Locke and Lara-Le are divorced (and why). I am aware that Lara-Le married Wynmacher and had a son with him (Kneecaps). I am aware that Locke is currently dead. This is an alternate reality in my personal Sonic faniverse, please respect it. I'm not fond of Locke's redesign next to his classic. If you think you need to police DA for continuity problems go find something more constructive to do with your time; make love to your girlfriend/boyfriend (or get one), get a hobby, get a job, and get a better understanding of what's really worth getting hot and bothered about... like slave labor and human trafficking. okay? Thank you and have a pleasant day.

I always liked this couple better. I don't know, but there's just something about Locke that's so...Byronic, that it's both sympathetic and awesome. That, and I never really liked Wynchamer; too much of that 'perfect husband' vibe.
At least in the main continuity, Locke managed to realize that he made terrible mistakes and regretted them. However, if there was ever a part of the experiment that he did not come to regret, is that Knuckles came out of it as a fine Guardian and son.

Holy crap, why didn't I comment on this? o_o
Love the drawing, I think there ought to be shadows placed where there's overhang (Ie; Locke's hood casting a shadow on his forehead, Lara's hand casting a shadow on Locke's face), but that's just me, and I know it's way past late for that ehehe.
Still looks fabulous though ^^
Love how you did the window behind them.

Just one more comment cuz I can't get over this beautiful piece : Sabre, why can't you be so brave and noble like your son? He's setting a perfect example of what a Guardian should be and how he should treat his woman!

Nice! I believe deep down Locke does still love Lara-le anyway and I don't doubt that there would be at least one Alternate reality where they are still together and Locke chose his love over tradition...
I wonder how Knuckles himself would've turned out if they did stay together...and Locke honored Lara-le's wishes to not treat Knuckles like a guinea pig.

If anyone bugs you about using an alternate universe, just remind them that there's a thousand plus universes within the comic series.
Not to mention the different forms of canon from both sets of comics (Archie and Fleetway) and the variety of games, most of which have almost nothing to do with each other.
Who knows? Maybe we fanfiction writers are merely discovering new ones?
The very canon of the comics gives itself over to these alternate realities in a way that few other stories can.
And fanfiction authors rejoice.
By the way: I like your version.
I like it a lot.
Faving....

I never really saw the difference between fanfic writers and the people that "professionally" write for Archie Sonic. How often did they REALLY ask for Sega's permission to go ahead with a story? ;3

That, too.
Though while you're at it, you might want to add Fleetway to that list (Sonic the Comic, in the UK). And I wouldn't be surprised if there's still others.
As to the difference, I've actually found professional authors who see little difference.
Many of those who write Star Trek/Wars novelizations, for instance, or other novelizations, see their work as fanfiction they get paid for.
Can't seem to find the page where she said that, though....
My original point, though, was merely in reply to the various "but it didn't happen that way in canon" arguments.
Sonic the Hedgehog, at least the Archie version, actually has 1000 universes. At least.
If we want to write something that doesn't quite match canon, well.... Who said we were writing in Mobius Prime? (Shoot, I think my stories span half a dozen universes, even when they draw on each others' histories. )
Alternate realities, here we come!

Couldn't resist- totally in love with this picture. I enjoy your take on these characters too. It's a refreshing change from the usual most-always-follow-canon-no-exceptions crowd.
And can I say how sad it is that you have to put up a disclaimer because people are too stupid to understand that different people have different character interpretations? I'm with queenmoreta; if they don't like it they can go somewhere else.

fuck that purist message at the bottom, if they don't like it they can sod off. *cough*
I really like this one, i'm nowhere near as big a nut as you but I really love this couple and I love your version of the story, it's more appealing to me, since i didn't much like the divorce, locke redesign and wynmacher XP.
I love hooded characters too, hence i got one mysefl . only difference is Locke did it for you and Kragok did it for me. :3.
loving the line work and colours on this, I like the small amount of highlights too makes them look like their in the dark but they stand out. Also that looks foggy as hell out the window, I like it .

Nice to see these two! I loved Locke and Lara, I don't know why they had to split them up. She was a ball of fiest and Locke, I feel loved her to the end. Archie could have had an awesome soap opera on their hands had they kept their tension going.

Yeah, I stopped reading comics a while back. The stories were getting too convoluted; nothing too great to hold my attention... and I wanted to focus on my original stuff. I had heard he had died and thought that was rather crappy to do away with Knux's daddy...but then again I also thought his mom getting remarried to a dbag and having a half brother named kneecaps was all so pretty crappy XD
