Description The modular Brushset is the Result of my journey through the possibilties of Kritas Brushengine. In the Beginning it was not my intention to make a complete Brushset for Krita, but with more and more Presets summing up on my Harddisc i had to sort out the best of them and optimize the settings. By that time it was kind of logical to bring all the stuff together and prepare it for a releasable Set of Brushes.

(03.Feb 2014)

More than the previous versions of this set, this is the collection of tools, I personally prefer and tweaked to my needs, and not what i considered to be needed in general. That is why it is not something one may call complete and it was never meant as an replacement for the tools that ship with Krita.

One thing i believe in is that higher specialized tools reduce creative processes. On the other hand the spectrum of possible tools in traditional Art creation, is as wide as the imagination can go - endless. Hence that, we must find a balance, giving the best tools to bring imagination to the canvas, without limiting creativity by a dictation of the Tools we use. V4 of my Brushset is the version, that comes closest to this, from my own viewpoint.

Wow! Alles bereits sortiert in diesem fabulösen Rechts-Klick! Ich muss mich bei Dir/Euch bedanken! Das Set ist spitze! 😙👍

You can use the images found in the brushes folder. In fact these are mostly created with gimp in its own brushformat (.gbr). The settings aka brushdynamics will not work in gimp (files in the paintoppresets folder -> .kpp). These are specific to Krita...

I don't know if this is the place to post this or not? But anyways... I just wanted to report that the paintoppresets/X2_Trdaitional/2D_Wet_Brush/ ~Softmix ~Flat mix ~Flar Dry mix ~Grainy Mix ~Dense Grainy Mix ~Patchy Mix; are all not useable it Krita 2.8 or in 2.9 Beta 2. When loaded into the presets folder and krita is rebooted, there is an 'x' on the icon in the brushes menu and I am unable to use any of the brushes noted above. I currently have the watercolor presets installed and they work great.
Is there a way that I can modify the .kpp files to make them work?
Thanks again for all your hard work puting these brushes together and sharing them.
Cheers!

Hey, thanks for reporting that. I will have to check this when i have time to. This problem occurs regulary even with brushes that use procedural brushtips. Its really annoying, because fixing it is a try and error thing. I am pretty sure that the brush images are not missing. Sometimes it helps to clear (probably corrupted) configuration files. You also can try to save the brush with a new name after you have selected the corresponding brushimage. Unfortunately you do not know which one this is..

I will do a complete rework on the set for 2.9 so that it can be used with the new resource manager, but i am not sure when i can do it - i hope i can get it done shortly after the official 2.9 release.

best regards

Thank you very much.
Yes the icon was there but it had an 'x' in the corner of it.
I found more brushes that wouldn''t work, so redoing the set would probably be the best option.

Is there a turorial that shows step by step how to make the brush presets? I don't have any experience in programing, but I would like to know how it all works.

Cheers!

Okay, there is the userbase-wiki: userbase.kde.org/Krita

At the bottom of the page there are some links to brushes. The Informations there are not really up-to-date, but it is a good start.

I have written a short article about krita's brushfiles on my blog: vascobasque.wordpress.com/2013…

And last but not least you can always ask at krita's IRC: krita.org/irc/

Hope this helps

I downloaded the brushes but am having trouble opening them into Krita. I'm not exactly the most tech savvy person so what do you mean by 'Copy the resource folders (brushes/paintoppresets) into your user directory of Krita.' because I don't know how to do this. :'D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrindGod In reply to KirasDarkLight [2015-01-19 13:21:16 +0000 UTC]

okay np..

1 - Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip file (krita_modular_brushset_v4_by_grindgod-blabla.zip) -> Rightclick -> Extract All - > Choose a location or just click Next
2 - Open the extracted folder (the name of the folder is the same as the name of the .zip file...)
3 - Open the folder Modular_Brushset_V4
4 - Select the folder named "brushes" and the folder named "paintoppresets" (Select both with Ctrl + LeftClick)
5 - Rightclick on the selected folders -> Choose Copy

The next steps depend on your operating system and your version of krita - i guess it´s windows and krita 2.8

7 - Start krita -> Open the Edit Menu -> Choose the last menu entry called "Resources" -> in the submenu choose "Open Resources Folder"
8 - Your File explorer should open the location where your own custom stuff for krita is stored = your krita "User Directory"
9 - In this folder Rightclick -> Choose Paste -> A window will pop up asking you if you want to integrate the copied folders into the existing ones -> Check the Checkbox at the bottom and choose yes (the checkbox = yes to all files)

This is the most detailed step by step description i can imagine.. but it might vary if your OS is winXP or Vista or a Linux Distro. However the User Directory for Krita is located in your Home folder (../user/your_username).
But it is hidden by default. In your file explorer settings you can change the settings to show hidden folders. You then will see a folder in your Home Directory called "AppData" and in this folder you see "Roaming". This folder is used to store your personal application data like stuff you configured, custom files, temporary data and more. There you should find your krita user directory. I always bookmark this location in my file explorer to easily access these files.

I hope this helps..

Good luck

So if we don't want tilt we use EXTRA, which does have as many?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrindGod In reply to Juneias [2014-06-17 05:05:46 +0000 UTC]

No. The folder contains only the presets the normally use Tilt as separate Version with different dynamics (without tilt sensor).
 To use them:

Copy the X0_NoTilt Folder to the paintopprests folder where the main set is located.

You can use these brushes alongside with the normal set or delete the unneeded Tilt Versions manually:

a) in your file explorer go to the paintoppresets folder and search for the pattern "_T.kpp" - this should sort out all Tilt presets so that you can delete them all at once
b) remove them in krita just as you do it with any other unneeded resource

OR

Visit my blog -> vascobasque.wordpress.com/2014…

At the bottom there is a download link to a "No Tilt"-Version: Download and install this and you are good to go. It contains all the same presets just without tilt.

How you edit the Brush Thumbnails and add images of Brush image, Cryon image, or what ever tool its mimicking ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrindGod In reply to Nadihalli [2014-04-18 17:13:55 +0000 UTC]

The brush-presets are actually 'special' png files with meta-information's embedded, containing the needed code for a brush to work. But still png´s.. So you can open the .kpp files like a png with any appropriate application e.g. krita (or gimp or whatever) and edit the image. Just save it in the original format (kpp). Another way is to use the scratchpad in the brushwindow, where you can change any brush-parameter. Select the brush you want to edit and save it with a new name and with whatever  you have painted on the scratchpad. The second method is good for temporary saved brushes. For a nicer and more detailed result i would recommend the first method..

You might want to read this article: CUSTOMIZING KRITA BRUSHES – TRICKS AND TRAPS on my blog.. In the article you will find more detailed information's and links around this topic.

GrindGod In reply to Tytoquetra [2014-03-03 06:39:08 +0000 UTC]

1 Unzip the Archvie

2 Open the folder where you store your custom resources for Krita

-> in Krita v2.8 you can find this location via: menu - edit - resources - open resources folder

-> or in the file explorer you can search for krita/brushes and krita/paintoppresets

3 Copy the brushes and the paintoppresets folders from the unzipped archive to this location

4 If your tablet does not support Tilt, you can find an extra folder for alternative presets without tilt activated
