Description For your viewing pleasure, I proudly present to you...
Spectre

"I've been working on this poem
for 12 years...
There's a lot of expectation.
I don't wanna disappoint my fans...."
Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
Spectre is really great!

- Norther Winslow

I've been working on this piece for ages... but I think it was all worth it. The stars took so long, I had to make so many of them... I did a lot of digital painting in this one, as well as a ton of apophysis renders. This was a really intense and fragile piece to do and that's why it took so long. This is a very important piece for me especially since it will be a while until I submit anything )= I know it's sad but I'll be back soon I promise! I'm going through some major life changes right now and I'm moving back to the U.S.A in about 8 days, so getting this piece done was a miracle on its own.

My favorite part is probably the sword like thing jutting out the top, it was a lot of fun to draw. I also like the sparkly stars.

Here's the stats.
~ 24 hours, I know, I'm slow...
~ 500 layers
Programs used: Photoshop CS2, Apophysis
No tablet.

Feel Free to download but please don't rip it and print it. And feel free to comment and fave as much as you like. It's much appreciated.
Widescreen only.
If you like it, you download it, if you download it, you fave it.

i think that this piece of space art is incredibly impact as the brightness of the nebula against the subtle shades of the dark background really to make for an interesting piece of great art work.

Good Points:
The detail within the Nebula is mind boggling, i've tried and failed many times to try and get that to work. Great work e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

The choice of colours is interesting. in all honesty i don't think that these colours occur naturally in space but i think that adds to the magic of the picture.

Bad Points:
I feel that there are too many "Large" stars in the piece. do some research on stellar phenomenon and you'll find that a nebula that is several lightyears in size only had a few stars in it.

Overall:
Overall i feel that this is simply amazing. i look forward to seeing more e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thanks for the critique! That seems to be most people's complaint, that it's unreal, in almost all my work.

But if that's it I'm satisfied with that. I don't like to make art that looks totally real, that's not the point for me. I'm aiming for something anomalous and beautiful. That's the wonder of space, there could be anything out there. Even this "nebula" is unreal, we've never seen anything like this and yet most accept it as a nebula. It's like magic, you want to be fooled.

Not to say that your critique is unfair by any means at all. I'm very grateful. I'm just justifying why I make my art the way I do. And I'm plenty aware about stellar phenomenon. You don't make this much space art without having a huge interest in space and astronomy.

oh yea i have a massive interest in space and astronomy.

and i agree. space is so vastly unexplored, there could be a nebula out there that looks like this...
space is so varied and odd at times that something as simple as a hydrogen gas cloud can inspire people

i still think its awesome regardless

I still like this piece conceptually. The eerie cave-like gas in the middle and the overflowing blue clouds on the bottom with energy zipping and buzzing all-around. I actually like all the "characters" portrayed here, they just need to be re-arranged. I remember being dissatisfied with this piece because I had put so much effort into it and I felt it didn't pay off, but now I see how much I learned in the process of doing it. Let that be a lesson to people who feel like they're not doing anything with their art.

This is amazing!

I wouldn't have been able to make anything like this in a week, let alone 24 hours.

Thanks so much, glad you like it. A lot of my stuff glows. I use a lot of glow effects so I guess that explains it.

Eek! No tablet >_< you are more patient than I. Great job

Out of curiosity, why did you only add spikes on some stars, but not on others?
The delicate tendrils in the nebula look awesome, they're definitely my favorite part. The gas clouds and varying densities are spot on. Again, a really swell piece <3

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Grogee In reply to Zunii-H [2010-08-06 15:36:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, I just made a bunch of stars and put them where I felt they should go. Blue/purple in nebula means a crap-load of heat, which is usually methane, hydrogen, and a ton of x-rays. More heat means more stars so that's why there's a varying density in the stars, but as far as the spikes, I don't think the piece would look good if they we're all spiky.

I loved making the tendrils and was really excited when they came out looking like they did. Thanks again for the compliment.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Zunii-H In reply to Grogee [2010-08-06 15:44:03 +0000 UTC]

I see. The reason why I asked about the stars was because, typically(like in photographs) the spikes are created by reflecting telescopes because of the distortion of the secondary mirror. And those spikes are usually proportional to the stars' brightness.
I don't have any issues with aesthetically altered ideas in space art I just always ask about them when I see someone has added that particular detail into their piece, and it by no means diminishes your work in my oppinion
