EDIT: I added slides with more informations about face and body shading. With tips how to make a palette for the body!As I promised I made for you a tutorial where I show you how to make a pixel portrait.
It's flash version and I think it's better than normal stretching tutorial.

I have been trying to create a pixelated portrait, but didn't get the look I wanted.

Holy crap. That is some hardcore pixel art. I'm not a huge fan of pixel art, but I'm gonna fave this tutorial on the basis that the technique, theory and explanation were solid.

Lol.Im using Photoshop Cs3...had Cs5 but it was eating up all my space on disk even if I had enough of free space for it to use its "skrach disk". Lets see >3....
