It depends. Sometimes I work on these in only a few sittings of up to 8 hours each. Often I catch myself being distracted by music or funny videos during those sittings.
All in all, I would say, that I need 10-20 hours for each image. There are, however, some images that need only a few hours (2h-5h) and others for which 20 hours are not enough for me. It depends on my concentration and mood.

If you're unsure about being able to work with a tablet or not, I suggest you should buy a wacom bamboo first.
If getting and using wacom is everything you can think of, I suggest you should go directly for the wacom intuos or maybe even the cintiq.
Official dA contests often give away wacoms as prizes.

I like the way you create such scenary of destruction.
They're very impressive and awe inspiring.
I like the blue-red/yellow tnes contrast.
The random directions of the spaceships suggests a rash, hasty and desperate flight.
There are just few stars in the nebula, the rest is ok.
Very beautiful.
