"Panzer tank" is a tautology, as German Panzer means 'tank', so Megatron turns into a tank tank.

*puts on pedant glasses* "Panzer" is actually the german word for "Armour" - it's short for "Panzerkampfwagen", which is "Armoured Fighting Vehicle".

Diachron ist das korrekt. Synchron jedoch ist die ursprünglich abgekürzte Form ein selbständiges Lemma und die allgemein verbreitetere. Ich würde vermuten, dass in vielen kleinen Wörterbüchern "Panzer" im Sinne von 'tank' als Eintrag zu finden ist, "Panzerkampfwagen" hingegen nicht.
