Description
When I was watching "War of the Colossal Beast" the other day for my other project, they talked about going down to Mexico to capture the giant. I thought to myself, "Boy, this ought to be neat." Images of guys trying to rustle the giant up...a few getting crushed in the process. Nope - no such luck. In the movie all they did was bait the big sucker with some freshly baked bread laced with chloral hydrate, and waited until the big lug passed out. In 1958 I would have asked for my movie money back. Now here is how it should be done - you can see that the poor guy in charge of the syringe got flattened before he could get it in, and his buddies now have a titanic task of wrestling the monster into submission. I have a feeling that they will have their hands full.BTW, here is the initial sketch gulliver63.tumblr.com/image/13… , and the actual development gulliver63.tumblr.com/image/13…
Lois Griffin is the property of Seth MacFarlane.

You have a guy walk up, offer himself as a toy. While the giantess busies herself with the bait, the rest of the team gets her.

Hmmmm... What about just saying "Hey there, sexy lady! Wanna hear my Kiss bootlegs collection?". Maybe it makes things a tad easier.
Other than that, glad she hasn't Manning's charred face on "War Of The Colossal Beast".

Oh, thank God for that - that scarred face was the greatest example yet of something "lampshaded" - the fact that they couldn't get the original actor back for the sequel. But they used clips from the first film.

::chuckles:: I didn't know I was going to start a debate, but I'm glad people like it as much as I do. This started from a doodle, like most of my stuff.

A very interesting and cute giantess Lois pic. Of course in real life, a bunch of guys trying to wrangle this giantess like a steer would never work. But this is still an interesting action pic. If you remember the capture of Glen Manning in the movie, after the chloral hydrate took effect and he started to pass out, Manning fell on the poor Mexican police sergeant and smushed him. Well done.

Yeah, I laughed my ass off when he came down. He either mushed him, or came very close to him - at any rate, it was hysterical. And all he did that whole film was just grunt like an animal. It would have been much more interesting to give him some intelligent dialogue. Plus this was such a lame flick in that we don't see anyone get offed - they mention that the one researcher gets killed when Glenn left, but we never see it.

Well, you have to remember that that film was produced in the late 50s, and the motion picture code against certain scenes was still in force, so naturally they couldn't actually show Glenn killing that researcher as he makes his escape. And while Glenn's dialogue was limited to grunting like an animal, when he supposedly comes to his senses near the end of the film, he finally recognizes his sister, Joyce, and says her name before grabbing some high-tension power lines and frying himself.

You remember this film well; before I'd seen it this weekend, I think I was about 9 the last time I saw it. We saw it on the Cool Ghoul show in Cincinnati, which would have to be before late 1972.

I had a video copy of the same film and saw it numerous times before I somehow lost the video. I have been toying with the idea of going on Amazon.com and ordering another copy, just for nostalgia's sake.

Not to get off topic, but we've had storms roll through here; we really didn't get anything, except very heavy downpours, but they had a small tornado in Greenwood, which is about 25 miles south of us. Pretty far from a white Christmas, I'd say...

We've only had a couple of days of rain here in SoCal. Apart from that, the weather's gotten a little chilly. A lot of people I run into while doing errands such as grocery shopping often bitch and whine about the cold which always gives me a good laugh when I remember the winters I endured in Korea and West Germany during my Army hitch. As for the tornado in Greenwood, I'm just glad it wasn't near where you live.

They get hit a lot down there - that must be a pathway for them or something. I also was sad to hear on the news that a young boy was killed in one of those storms down in Holly Springs, Mississippi - my wife and I have been down there a couple of times in a cabin, and have had fun there in that part of the state. I got to ge good buddies with the guy who ran the Piggly-Wiggly store there in town. But when the deep south gets hit, they get hit bad with small, fast-moving tornadoes.

It's a very unusual thing - I've lived here nearly 40 years, and I really don't remember much severe weather around Christmas.

Well, according to the pundits at the weather service, we were supposed to have a snowy December; for the most part it's been around 50 degrees for most of the month.

As I'm sure you well know; meteorologists seldom get it right when it comes to forecasting. As for myself, the northern and northeastern states can keep their snowy Christmas. After three years serving in Germany and one year in Korea, I've had all the snow and ice I can handle.

...and after a winter at Fort Lost in the Woods, I don't care if I'm ever cold again. Oh, and BTW, the news said that there were four small tornadoes here in Indiana last night.

Yes, I remember your tales of misery at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. As for the tornados in Indiana; as long as they don't come near you, I'll be happy as I'm sure you'll be.

The closest they've come in ages is two years ago; the Starbucks is only about 11 miles up the road. I had a coffee there the other day; two years ago they had a car thrown into the store. www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&p…

From looks of things in the link you provided, that damage to that Starbucks is pretty extensive. I'm just glad you weren't in there when that car came through the window.

As a matter of fact, here was our picture from that afternoon; there's little indication that just 11 miles to our north a small tornado was dismantling a Starbucks www.simpworks.com/forums/downl… . Here's the store a few days after that, with a temporary trailer set up to continue serving customers www.simpworks.com/forums/downl…

At least that Starbucks location was still able to do business in spite of the damage. Amazing how some entrepreneurs will continue despite nature's fury.

I agree; the answer to "How do you capture one?" is "Are we sure capture is a better idea than talking?"
If you really, absolutely, positively have to knock one out, perhaps a harpoon gun firing rohypnol filled harpoons?
Also, neat little guys and really neat Sikorsky S-55 (H-19, or for us Brits Westland Whirlwind).

Well, what I really can't get about the Colossal Beast movie is that the guy's IQ was nearly zero - it would have been neat if he were still sharp and clever, able to make traps and such. It would be an interesting conversation if they would try to reason with her.
I just love the whole dynamic of them trying to rustle her - it would be like trying to rustle a tornado.
I loved digging up a picture of that helicopter - kind of added a little retro flavor to it. Speaking of the Whirlwind, maybe some idea in the UK might be considered...maybe a movie poster or something.

The question shouldn't be "How do you capture a giant?" but rather the much more sensible question to ask is "Should you really try to?". Perhaps it would be better simply trying to talk to her? xD

::laughs:: My mind goes back through the years to Gene Wilder in "Stir Crazy" talking about Oxberger - "Has anyone just tried to talk with him?" I think the best thing would be to just let her be - certainly safer...
