Description
This has been sitting in my sketchpad for months in pencil. I believe that this is only the second time I've ever drawn Maggie Simpson, and it's only the second pic I've posted that concerned one of my lifelong passions, aviation. I bet it gave Marge fits when she decided to take some lessons. Since Maggie is famous for not saying anything on the show, her first words that we hear may just be, "Springfield Traffic, this is Cessna 566 Golf departing runway 21 Springfield Traffic."Related content

"Springfield Tower, this is Supermarine Spitfire Vb registration Golf - Sierra Tango Foxtrot India requesting permission for engine start, and clearance for immediate taxi to active and take-off. Be advised this type has 10 minutes from engine start to take-off or it will start overheating. If I am not airborne in 15 minutes from engine start I will be forced to shut down to prevent engine damage. Foxtrot India over."

That would be a nice visitor to the airport. Last summer I was at the Kentucky Exposition Center near the Louisville airport when a P-51 came in for a long final.

Well, everyone else draws her half naked and stuff...gotta admit that it probably hasn't been done. She looks cute grown up, with her green Keds tennis shoes.

I'm not familiar with 566s; obviously, you two are on a first name basis. Showing my ignorance, I would have guessed a 172. I didn't recognize Maggie without her pacifier. Good work.

Actually 566G was the call letters of a 1966 Cessna 150 that I used to fly...I loved that thing, but unfortunately someone damaged it beyond repair about 20 years ago. The one I used in the drawing is a modern Cessna 172 Skyhawk; they're fancy inside, but lack the really nice paint jobs they had in the 60's (they just paint 'em white and throw on a few stripes now...).

Of course...the golf wasn't some nickname--allpha-bravo-charlie should have told me what it was. The last 172 I flew in was a mid 1950's with upgraded instrumentation in 1970-4. Piers and I would get up early on Sunday mornings and fly all over the midwest to airport pancake breakfasts--really nice pilots and wives. The best flights were to Ohare to see Howe and Hull face off that first year and then the Tigers & Whitesox after that. He would take me either to Unos, The Billygoat or Gene & Georgettis. We would flip for the tab with his silver dollar and he always lost and would spend a good 10min bitching about his luck. Piers showed me the two headed coin when I was was packed for Washington state. I thought he was going to take his cessna down over lake michigan when he was diagnosed with leukemia but he died in a hospital bed in ann arbor. His wife took flight lessons after that and she flew the single and twin engines for years altho I was never with her. Those were great years.

In 1987 I had a sweet deal at Mt. Comfort Airport...I would do light maintenance to Max's planes, and would get some free flight time here and there. Old Golf was one of those planes. She was a homely beast when I saw her, butterscotch brown with a red cowling, but she was comfortable to fly. I love those old-school panels and those old "coffee grinder" radios. BTW, my first ever trip to Chicago was almost in a twin Piper, but the pilot found out from flight service that there were embedded thunderstorms along the route. You can see me in a more recent flight at [link] along with the ice storm and my attack kitty...

That was fun; I can easily hear the increasing level of sound and feel the bumps and vibration. What you don't get tho is the cool sounds of swinging the prop but it sure is nice to see more than four or five instruments. On early morning summers, once, twice a wk, Mike and I would ride our bikes out to the airport and usually catch two or three rides before noon and hang out in the hanger checking out the girly calendars and the dizzying smell of esters while trying to bum a coke and a story.

One of the most wonderful sounds in life is hitting that master switch, listening to the gyros whiz up, and then that prop turning over. And, to this day, I can still see a windsock at an airport and tell you the exact windspeed. And that wonderful smell of avgas...good times...

A Cessna Skyhawk is a vehicle that is very near to my heart. I've flown the older ones and the newer ones - the new ones have really nice leather seats. Virtually the Chevy Impala of the skies, you'll find a Skyhawk like this one in every country in the world. They used to be built in Wichita Kansas, but now they're built in Kansas City. She'll do about 130 mph at full throttle.

I rarely get to do it anymore, because it really costs an arm and a leg...I like to try and take one lesson a year. Most of my flying was in the late 1980's. Check out one of my more recent flights at [link] (and the incredible ice storm). The plane is the same as you see in the picture.

Yeah, I can imagine. I checked out some of your pilot videos as well as some others Really nice channel, I subscribed haha
And yeah, I saw the sleet storm. That's amazing! While down in Australia, we're flooding!

The last of the ice is just now melting. As you could see, the two storms left us with about a 4 inch deep layer of ice. I'm going to be 48, and I've never seen anything like it. How'd ya like the fox attacking a squirrel in the back yard? I saw a wolf out on a frozen pond recently as well...of course I had no camera on me!

Oh wow...4 inch ice o_O we'd never see something like that!
omg that fox was just simply adorable! It even pounced at one point and I let out a little "aww"
awww pity you didn't catch that!
I also saw your cat running for the shower ahaha!

I shot that fox right off of our back porch...I think he had a squirrel back there. It's also fairly common to see red-tailed hawks and deer around here (a deer hit the back end of my car in 1992...did $500 damage). As far as Belle goes, we love her dearly, but it's getting annoying to have her wake us up at 4:30 for a drink of bath water

heheh ^^ oh wow...500? that's a lot of damage from a hawk O:
haha I'd think so too It's also not common for a cat to love water o.o

Oh, not a hawk, a deer. I never saw the darn thing. I had just come off of a night shift downtown...it really scared me because I thought I'd hit a person. I was surprised to see the damage to the back of my car instead of the front. It must have hit my fender with it's hooves and just kept on going. The hawks and owls are a neat thing to see...they eat mice, which is a good thing.

Oh wow!
Usually a kangaroo can cause great damage to the car if you hit them at a fast enough speed, but I don't think it'd cause as much damage as a deer.

When my father was alive, he used to be a claims adjuster. He had to handle a claim in southern Ohio where an off duty sheriff hit a large horse...he had a convertible and was killed instantly when the beast got flipped onto his roof. Some of the big male deer can be quite big and heavy as well...I was lucky I got a tap in the back end of my car...

I just had the coolest thing happen...an old friend sent a message from high school on Facebook...I have not seen this person since 1980! I hope more old friends come out of the woodwork. And get this - she owns an art gallery on the south side of town.

I still remember when our commercial art teacher drove us downtown to get art supplies at Bates...that was in September of 1979! I still shop there, but they've long since moved from the Circle. She remarked about how much I loved Led Zeppelin in those days (still do, really).

The music was such a huge part of it...I still listen to that music as I do my Futurama stuff today. It was all about the supergroups, with their really cool album covers. Concerts were cheap, less than $10, so we saw a lot of bands. BTW, Australia's Men At Work has one of the best live albums I've ever heard...

Yeah, they're a good band!

I can actually remember the 60's...I started kindergarten in 1968 in Cincinnati. The 70's was my childhood (I was 14 when my father took my brother and I to see Star Wars). I was a young man in the 80's, turning 21 in 1984 - I love the hell out of those MTV 80's hits...fun music. I was married in 1990, and Holly came along in 1993.

My three main musics are Rock, Classical and Jazz. It just depends on what mood I'm in, but I do like rock best when I'm doing artwork. With that, I'd like to thank you for a wonderful chat...I don't know what time it is down under, but we're approaching midnight. I'll have to send you some pics and stuff, like the deer damage. G'night
