Description Doodle Time! These are fun, and they're also good practice. I'm especially proud of the Edna sketches, as I was trying to kill time in a Starbucks before a staff meeting. The Patty/Selma one isn't too important, except that I was exploring better ways to draw them. The one in the dark gray paper I just did today. The Marge/Maggie is one for a "Good Life" comic that I will have to finish someday. Anyway, it's all just me practicing and having fun.

All character are the property of Matt Groening.

Yes, doodling can not only be fun but also a good way to pass the time before more mundane things like staff meetings.Β  I like the "sourpuss" look on Patty.Β  You are indeed getting better at rendering the Simpsons characters.Β  I also like the humorous names you gave to the drawing directions on Patty's ugly mug, such as "duck bill" for the Simpson overbite and "Dick Nixon nose" for Patty's schnozzle.Β  Keep on doodling. Oh yeah, I've always called that a duck bill. The typical Simpso-rama character starts with either a "rugby ball" or a "thumb" for the head, and has that "duck bill" for the mouth. And then there is a little "eye bump" just above the eye. From there you just modify everything else to come up with a character...ears, nose, hair (or lack thereof). You can really do any celebrity that way to Simpsonize them.

Whenever I draw the head of a Simpsons character, Marge for instance, I start with an upside down "U" shape followed by two circles for the eyes with the nose tucked in between the eye circles followed by the overbite.Β  For her hair, I add another upside down "U" and just add the little bumps around the perimeter.

::rubs hands:: Oh, I'm an expert on Marge. Her head is two heads in size upward. I actually start with a rugby ball for her head, and then place that nearer eye in the middle. I then finish out the head with the far eye, duck bill, and that back neck line that connects with the ear. For the body I start with a lozenge shape for the upper torso and a round shape for the lower part of her. She's about 5 1/2 heads tall, save the hairdo. She's fun to draw.

Indeed, Marge is very fun to draw.Β  When I draw her, I usually draw her head, face and hair according to canon as you've no doubt seen in my own portrayals of her.Β  Her body however, I draw in my own style.Β  Especially if I show her in a swimsuit.

The main thing that I don't do are those "spaghetti arms" that you see in the first few seasons. I too try to draw her a little more elegant than canon. One other thing I like is to give the Simpsons a reflection on their eyeball in close shots, which is definitely a no-no on the show.

I too don't like the "rubber hose" look of the arms on the Simpsons characters, so naturally I give Marge well defined arms and shapely legs.Β  And I also like to use light shadow to give the eyes more definition.Β  Also with the Family Guy characters, the eye pupils are usually little black dots.Β  That doesn't work for me, especially when drawing female Family Guy characters like Lois.Β  So I always give her nice green irises with light reflections, a feature that you've commented on more than once.

Well you make those guys look really cute. I think that we all like to embellish just a bit. Hell, we're artists - that's what it's all about. And we have the freedom to do it.

Amen, Brother.Β  As long as I'm able to do so, I'll continue to draw characters like Lois Griffin and Marge Simpson as sexy and attractive as my OC, Rhonda.

And I've had just as much fun drawing little Richelle as a gal pal for Rhonda.Β  I think they make a great pair.

I do them slightly different than canon, with Marge having slightly bigger eyes. But I love passing along tips to people.

Ah now that you’ve mentioned it I see that now! It looks cute! And that’s nice you give tips. I’ve been tempted to do fanart of Futurama before but I’ve been afraid of completely botching it up.

All you do is just get in there and start playing. If and when you can you get model sheets from Google or yahoo. l used to make up my own model sheets where I couldn't find them. I also have about a thousand screen grabs from the shows on my drive, and I keep them organized so that I can find them.
