Description I love dragon and this is getting closer to my dream dragon. The proportion is right and I like the long tail. The next upgrade should be spines followed by scales.

Paper: Japanese foil (gold) of 50cm square size.

Credits: Satoshi Kamiya's new book, I shaped the legs of my dragon according to his ancient dragon model, it has a very efficient method of narrowing thick points.

As always comments and suggestions are welcomed

Do you use just foil to make your origami? Because that's what I think is the reason why the layered folded paper (tops of the wings) remain folded. I never knew you could use foil xD. I always used paper ! Oh and do you cut the paper? I try not to cut mine, that's what gives it the challenge . Extreme job well done .

guspath In reply to bombermanx [2005-05-22 03:59:55 +0000 UTC]

Another point you mentioned, using a square of paper to fold without cutting. Interesting that you share the same view as mine. I find that as the "rule of the game" and I always stick to the rule to make it interesting.

When I began folding 4 years ago, I was amazed by lots of creation featured in the best origami magazine, tanteidan: [link] , which all looked so realistic but claimed to be folded from square. I don't trust them so I buy the magazines. I was blown away, they are actually all from square

The most complex origami folded from square up to date is this chinese dragon by Mr. Satoshi Kamiya san: [link] I have the creasing pattern (not cheap, cost me 15$US) so I believe it is actually from square, 1meter x1meter to produce 30cm long dragon.

Haha... I do art for hobby not for money I am affraid if I do it for money then it will just be like a factory, mass production of models. In fact, I usually only keep one of my model for photo, making too much is just repetition and it is quite boring.

Ah yes, I understand. I'm gonna stop with the origami for now. Lots of problems are going on with me and ... it's tough. I made the smallest flower I've ever made. It's only 1/8 of an inch long. Check it out in my gallery (the most recent one).

Hi bombermanx Thank's for visiting and the comments

Thank's for the reply also

Yes you can make origami from foil. The rule of thumb is to use foil when you fold complex model as foil help to hold all layers together so they won't spread open. Some people hate the wrinkle that foil produce so they use other technique called wet folding. The wet the paper, fold while paper still damp and the finished model would hold its shape.

Now for simple model for example my welsh corgi or lion or golden rooster using foil would be superfluous, because the model won't spread open and foil will give a thin appearance on the finished model. So, for simple model I prefer thick paper, give it volume e.g. my golden rooster is folded from super thick paper using wet folding technique

Thank's so much for you interest in my firedrake.

He's a purist. He'll never cut the paper to modify shapes. All of his creations are uncut and purely folded from square paper.
I can guarantee you that coz I witness the folding process.

Uh..... ok xD. I might wanna try to make that firedrake thing. Just gotta print out that thing with the lines and I guess attempt over and over and over until I get it right, or just plain lose my patience and tear it in half xD. You should see the little flower I made on [link] . It's CRAZY!

...I bet if I made a bunch of em, I could make some awesome whatchamacallit thingamajigger....

Satoshi Kamiya brought out a book? Damn! ^_^

I'm one of those people who's sad that Montroll is now more into modulars and polygons and stuff than anything else.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

guspath In reply to Blackmane [2005-05-18 02:21:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, just recently Satoshi published his book. Too bad it is just a collection of his old diagrams wrapped in a nice book. The only new diagram is his ancient dragon, but too difficult for me to make.

John Montroll, he hasn't been producing anything recently, I really like his book, fun to fold, never get tired of his simple stuff. Yes, I saw his polygon book, nice, he made all those from square and the interlocking are tight as well.

You do origami? You know Satoshi Kamiya? first time in DA I heard someone actually know these artist. Not a clue from your gallery that you do origami

Blackmane In reply to guspath [2005-05-18 22:56:59 +0000 UTC]

hehe, he's a cool guy but he smells kinda funky. He's a fantastic whistler :3 I think I remember hearing him say that he was fed up with how the publishers wanted him to do books, though I think he is actually working on a polygon book, but that was as of last fall so by now I've no clue.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

guspath In reply to Blackmane [2005-05-19 02:09:04 +0000 UTC]

He has published that polygon book. I saw it in a bookshop. But I never enjoy folding geometric shape, I rather do animals and fantasy creatures. His fantasy creature book is cool and minimalistic, nice for building up basic origami knowledge. I always assume John is probably busy with his work in the University teaching complex math or something physics related so he has no time with origami any more. Happy to hear him still active and very happy to meet John's friend It's an honor

Nice Dragon! I love to make origami sculptures, but don't have any good origami books. What is the best book (s) that you know of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

guspath In reply to mummus [2005-05-17 03:13:57 +0000 UTC]

If you ask me the best book, irrespective to the complexity and difficulty to achieve the final origami model, I have to say a book by Satoshi Kamiya that was recently published: [link]
But that red dragon shown in the cover book takes 273 steps to finish, and the steps are extremely difficult to achieve without tearing the paper.

If you ask me best origami book with dragons in it which is relatively easy to make but complex enough to show essential anatomical details, I have to say this book by John Montroll:

guspath In reply to Roko-Epsilon [2005-05-09 02:52:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the kind comments
The head, I deliberately made the horns excessively long and it has a pair of small frills coming out behind the lower jaw. The head is slim and long like a spinosaurs and the lower jaw is wide open to give it a sense of movement. I also add an eye for the head to make it more realistic. I usually consider the head the most important part of my models
