During WW2 the Japanese, allies and the soviets agreed to a conditional surrender. They established the emperor would not be persecuted as a result of surrender, that the government would (fundamentally) stay the same and that no major territorial losses would be held.

The japanese surrender came later because one of the scientists working on the nuclear project was injured in a car accident and as a result the Manhattan project was delayed by a few months. This made it so that the Soviet invasion progressed further down into japanese territory. The Japanese (when they eventually got nuked), found it was less embarrassing to have been defeated by a miracle-weapon rather than a soviet invasion and thought the Americans would be more merciful than the soviets so they stated that as their reason for surrender.

Because of the Soviet invasion of Manchuria they had more leverage in the peace conference. They (the soviets) managed to gain Manchuria and North korea in the peace deal but the Japanese got to keep Southern Korea.

Because of the Soviet annexation of Manchuria, blunders on the side of the communist china, the communists in china having no foothold in Manchuria and victories on the nationalist side. The Nationalists eventually won the chinese civil war.
Japan is a Semi-Constitutional Monarchy with Hirohito still being the emperor. We can see the territories of Japan here illustrated in the “アジアの地図” or “Map of Asia” in English and it was made in 1960 by the Royal Japanese Cartographic association.
