Description a little practice i did. its actually one of the hardest things to animate. very basic but also complex. 7 drawings on 2's.
will also do another set for the 6 drawing sprinting cycles. different timing/leg positions. hope anyone find this useful when doing runs.

Dude, running is like the hardest thing to animate. Running and clothing flowing in the wind

one of the most underlooked skill in animation.
have you seen "letter to momo" film? it has some of the best running references.

Yeah, the animation really stands out to me, especially the way the characters move. It was kind of off putting at first, almost like it was "Too realistic" but it really makes me think of spirited away when I see it.

The snapping of the arms give the run animation a nice texture, same with the follow through. I should really practice this more often. this basic run really helps me get into CG animation easier.

wow great runs..as an animator how would you practice dificult coreagraphy for somthing like martial arts if it your first time with those kind of staging and gestures

Practice posing with momentum in mind and animate simple stuff like punching kicking and jumping/landing. Then u combine these action for the cool factor .

Also look at things like fights from people like Bruce Lee for inspiration.

I love this! Great perspective work and you can see how the figures transfer their weight from foot to foot, very smooth as well. Gotta love Korra's frantic jog

Hey, have you ever animated a walk or run cycle where the camera is circling around the person? If so I would be very interested in seeing it.
Nice work, these are awesome!

thanks, i know what you're talking about. most the time a scene like that, it is boarded so the feet are cut off the ground in animation. its a technical animation skill for tracking feet and steps in perspective, but not often used.

This reminds me of the time I tried my first animation
"I'm gonna draw somebody running while wearing a backpack!!!"
..How naive and foolish I was XD
This is fantastic! I love the Korra

The hardest part for me is keeping track of all the secondary animation. Good God my mind wants to explode with all that thinking...

Guts-N-Effort In reply to Chemsem [2013-05-12 07:26:22 +0000 UTC]

the hardest part is thinking movements in 3d. weight and momentum.

True...more head explosion on my part...all that thinking can't be good at one time. lol

This is all like magic to me, as I don't animate, but I love it regardless, particularly the perspective in the bottom left runner

This is wonderful, I agree these things are really hard to animate but this is very smoooth and everything is proportionate, and it looks really beleivable as well. Nice work!

aFletcherKinnear [2013-05-11 07:57:29 +0000 UTC]

You just have him running in place but I found the perspective run one of the most complicated and calculated ones to do. I remember a weird systematic graph that had multiple layers of markings. It's very hard to do a good run cycle w/ out reference. I usually refer to the good ol' Richard Williams book.

Guts-N-Effort In reply to aFletcherKinnear [2013-05-11 08:52:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah, its both the understanding, and be able to draw with small margin for errors. i've tried it many times on many projects. up til now that i can do both. you just have to try it again and again.

Rice-Lily [2013-05-11 06:47:24 +0000 UTC]

just drawing someone running is hard enough, animating someone running -silent whimpering- but it has to be done!
