Coloring in the Ghost In The Shell value sketch. I really enjoy more muted color schemes and characters whose clothes/equipment are dark or grey. It draws attention less to the accessories themselves but more to the character. I feel it fits well with the character of the Major, especially given the more serious contemplation of Identity.

I like how you kept their costumes simple here.Β  Sometimes the nutty costumes in GitS can feel out of place in incarnations where the subject matter is heavier.

The Major doesn't even have her trademark Purple/Blue Hair and Eyes! I may have misheard the one ad BUT, I don't think they used her right name - Kusanagi or Motoko.

from what i've seen they didnt get her attitude right either
batou is supposed to be a big guy, tall, strong build with broad shoulders, short hair and a stoic attitude...the guy they got looks like he's shorter and less built than scarlet, his hair looks like he's going super saiyan and he looks both too young and too weak to be the big badass tough guy batou is supposed to be.
this annoys me because batou is one of my favourite anime characters of all time

Well, it's Hollywood.
They have to have great names in it or a RL-movie of this matter might very well fail.
While GitS is a staple of anime/transhumanism/identity issues I'd take bets that there's not many people from the "traditional film" that watched it in its entirety and thought about the underlying narrative and problems it tackles.
So they have to cast a AAA actress who's well known for female roles in action but they can't possibly add another high profile male (sadly, the only one coming to mind roughly fitting the physique of Batou is D. Johnson) because everybody would assume it's more of a love story thing between the two...

And its not like GitS is hard to understand. The most basic question is Β - "Whatever can go wrong by putting a functioning human brain in a steel shell?". . .apparently a whole bunch of stuff can go wrong. From 'AI Evolution' to 'Laughing Man' to having sex with the opposite sex is I very, very, VERY painful. . (I'm not making that last oneΒ up.)

I dont think it's necessary to dumb down the story for a broader audience
GITS has done very well as it is, it will draw a large crowd, theres no need for it to give in to hollywood tropes
i mean, the whole appeal is the depth of the concepts it works with, otherwise its just going to be alot of fancy CG effects

Scarlet will do OK, but it wont be the major we are used to, she might do a good job though
im just annoyed by the batou actor, he's a good actor, he just doesnt suit the role at all, he's too young and not big enough.
and no the rock would not fit either...i get what you're saying, his body is the right physique
(but they can't possibly add another high profile male) Why not?
Ron perlman has been suggested on the internet a bunch of times, i think he'd fit perfectly
other possible actors - i think ed harris would fit, bruce willis, jason statham, even fassbender would be better than the guy they got

I gota say though, takeshi kitano for aramaki....his mannerisms are already quite similar to the role

Graeystone In reply to Crimzen250 [2017-03-05 18:42:40 +0000 UTC]

Personally I would've chosen Kate Beckensale for the Major.
Ron Perlman I agree for Batou. He not onlyΒ has theΒ body type but also the sarcastic/one liner attitude. Your other choices - eh. . .they got the body but not the personality one would expect for Batou.
As for the Togusa actor. . .never even heard of the guy.
******
More things about the movie that doesn't sit right with me - In one of the trailers there is a hint that the Major 'will seek revenge'. . .ok. . .in any previous incarnation did the Major ever seek revenge for anything? And did they change 'Accidental Plane Crash' to 'Terrorist Attack'?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crimzen250 In reply to Graeystone [2017-03-06 05:28:19 +0000 UTC]

yea i've never heard of the togusa actor either, but at least he's an asian, they may have white washed the main characters but at least the support cast seem to fit a bit better
like i said though, kitano as aramaki is right on the money

I like kate beckinsale as the major, nice choice, the personality she played in underworld is fairly similar to the major
i think mila jovovich would have been a good choice too, though kate resembles the major a bit more
I dont mind scarlet as the lead but just judging from the trailer she seems more vulnerable than the major ever was

As for the plot, from the scenes in the trailer it looks like they're doing the first movie (the scene where the major leaps from the roof, the scene where she fights with the guy wearing optical camoflage in the water)
but likely they've taken a fair bit of liberty with it, i hope not too much..

either way it will be visually stunning, looks amazing
i just really hope they dont butcher the underlying themes of the plot

Not the first time Hollywood 'white washed'(of course they done a lot of black washing to). In the Doctor Strange Movie, the Ancient One(Old Asian Male) is played by a 30 Something Irish Woman.

Well, the original GitS was released in 1989, so it had almost 30 years to build a following and seep into mainstream.
This movie - seen by a bottomline is all PoV - is a turn from the original fringe area of movie making without a "large" love/revenge story.

Ron Perlman as Batou would be cool.
But so would more Firefly have been...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crimzen250 In reply to GermanPete [2017-03-06 05:39:22 +0000 UTC]

yea exactly the 30 years of building the following means there is now a large following of pretty hardcore fans
there will be such outrage is its not good or they deviate too much from the type of themes in the original or take too much liberty with the story/characters lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GermanPete In reply to Crimzen250 [2017-03-08 05:53:57 +0000 UTC]

And that's just a small part of the potential movie goers.
But for a movie to be considered success there is no thirty year view, it has to make money in the first three weeks.
So: Cast high profile stars and hope that all the GitS fans tell everybody how cool it is and absolutely a must-see and that these folks hearing that then find time between XBox, Nintendo Switch and general couch potatoing to actually go see the movie while it's in theaters.
Otherwise: Nice idea, not enough revenue, nevermore. (Except in 2 years, when a reboot is made...)

Crimzen250 In reply to GermanPete [2017-03-08 09:09:42 +0000 UTC]

im not saying dont use high profile stars, and how high profile is the danish guy who plays batou? never heard of him before im sure hes a good actor but hes not high profile nor does he fit the role, only scarlet johansen and takeshi kitano (i wouldnt say he is high profile outside of japan though)
and the following has already been generated, this movie will benefit from the 30 years GITS has already been in existence
even without any following with the great visual effects used and the hype of the trailers i would say this movie would have done fine/made money,
like if i'd never seen GITS i'd still be interested in the movie (and probably wouldnt have a problem with any of the cast lol)

"and that these folks hearing that then find time between XBox, Nintendo Switch and general couch potatoing to actually go see the movie while it's in theaters."
not sure this is a problem, certainly not a problemΒ specificΒ to GITS....if anything this is an issue for all cinema releases

and i dont know what reboot you're talking about?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GermanPete In reply to Crimzen250 [2017-03-09 05:49:07 +0000 UTC]

The inevitable reboot if this movie doesn't score in the top 5 highest revenue movies of all time.
See Spider Man. That poor guy was rebooted so many times he's gotta feel like living in a tumbler...
OK, there's other reboots that made more / used the material better like Batman or Bond but still the current train of thought runs something like this:
No hit - wait until the public with their 30s attention span remembers not more than the rough idea of the story - reboot with more pow/bling/grit - see results - if unfavorable rinse and repeat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GermanPete In reply to Crimzen250 [2017-03-13 05:48:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, the way I see it - which I admit might be quite cynic - is that the studio now acquired the rights to do a movie adaption of a very successful anime.
So there's two ways for this to go: Either it's an instant hit and blockbuster that's crowded at the premieres around the world (aka "success" in studio management terms) or it's not.
And in that case the studio has a Β - no doubt expensive - license lying around to make one to three to something or other movies from the source material. And if there's not enough revenue from the first movie (in theaters and retail) to cover license cost + cast + filming + post-production + advertising + wages + manager gratifications for getting their hands on such a great license + manager bonus for a successful term they'll have to make more money off that license somehow.
So wait a bit after retail and start a remake. Or re-imagining or however they choose to call it. Given the source material it'd be clever to call it rebirth...

Very beautiful and I love how the sharpness and the muted colors blend well with one another.

On a nitpicky note: Why use normal, present day handguns? Usually, The Major/Section 9 Members would only use the standard issue Seburo M5. Although the left one looks similar to the Browning M-7 that Batou has used in the past.
