Thank you guys so much for your support here on dA! I know it sounds really cheesy, but all your faves and comments makes my day a little brighter everytime I read through them~

So we've hit 30k watchers today and I can only say thank you for your overwhelming support and love! I believe I'm one of the luckier users here on the site to be recognized and supported even though I'm mostly still a student at this art thing, and it just heartens me to know that there are people out there who enjoy my stuff witness my growth.

I feel like it's a good opportunity to do a little reflection and write a few things I would want to tell the "me" of 2013.

1. You are going to be in a world of frustration and struggle.

I've used to feel, until recently, very unprepared and anxious whenever I encounter an obstacle in my drawings. It got worse the more I tried to resist, instead I found it much better to accept it and move on. I've discarded a lot of paintings which I spent a good 6-8 hours on recently because they weren't good enough. The old me would have probably freaked out, but I've since learned to just move on and don't repeat the mistakes. It sounds painful to lose so many hours of work. (especially since I post new pieces frequently) But in a sense, they weren't lost. It was more of a really long lesson in "how not to screw up next time".

2. Be careful of social media.

I really don't mean to sound like an ass, but the most relaxing time is probably when you have really few watchers. Sure your work doesn't get seen by many, but the best thing is the sense of freedom and adventure! When I went by the name of "staplus" (yea I know really stupid name) back then and had 80 watchers, everyday on dA was just really fun and exciting. Predicting how many new watchers (ranged from 1-10) I will get from the next piece was like a pastime of mine! I also didn't really feel the urge to get my stuff seen or get "popular", since those big deviants were literally thousands of times larger than me it was just kinda impossible to get close.

The moment you start to gain a little traction though, you get a lot of weird feelings. Pressure to keep up the growth. Feeling the need to "please the audience". Growing your fanbase to match the biggest ones out there. The old things that satisfy you so much become meaningless.

Remember when you refreshed your page after like 2 hours and got 3 extra notifications? That was a really good feeling. I would go into the notifications just to visit the guy who fav'ed my stuff and give him a llama badge or something. I had this habit of not clearing notifications and would be really happy when it hit 100 (dA clears it regularly I think?) Now I can't really keep up with that. I just post, come back to read comments and post again.

I guess I'm saying "be careful" because it's easy to lose sight of your goals when all these things change around you. The only thing I can say is to stay focused on your goals, and don't let them change because of "others' demands"

3. Be cautious of art sites.

So recently I was listening in on one of Artgerm's livestreams and he was doing this Q&A and talked about this phenomenon of "The internet artist". Basically it's a magical person you find online who appears to be able to do anything and everything. The reality is that this "person" is a combination of hundreds or thousands of artists you see online, which makes him kinda omnipotent. The bad thing happens when you compare yourself to this monster.

I used to do it a lot. I would go on artstation, scroll around and feel like absolute shit. The combined prowess in all those works was just suffocating, especially when seen from the wrong perspective that I was in. So yeah, be really careful about that. Don't go in trying to be better than EVERYTHING. It's just not a very realistic goal.

4. Don't go taking long breaks.

This is really just a personal working style, but I'm the kind of person who needs to work through his obstacles. I tried just stepping away before, but I doesn't work for me. The longer I leave the problem alone, the worse it gets for me. If I have this drawing that's torturing me, I just kinda have to keep forcing it and trying out stuff with it until I work something out. I'm not talking about physical breaks though. It's pretty okay to just lie down for a while or something, but you can't allow your mind to "give up" or walk away.

This probably won't apply to a lot of people out there, but if taking long breaks doesn't work for your artblock or whatever, maybe try just brute forcing your way through~

So yeah, it's really late and it's been an ultra long day and I realized that when I read through how incoherent my rambling was (and how depressing it probably sounded), so I better end it here before I start typing nonsense in my sleep. Thanks for reading and hopefully it helps, or maybe it at least provides a little bit of food for thought!

Once again, thank you all for your support here on dA. I really mean it.

This journal helps a lot !
I'm very interested in how you get here within 2 years but now I really see it's attitude and hard work .
I think I've been lazy and didn't draw as much so there is only roughly 8 works i can really paint per year (now i think about it i cringe)
I'm curious if you are still a student ? I'm studying contemporary art but I'm doing digital drawing that's kinda weird xDD

aw this was so nice to read - I really liked no. 1. It always terrifies me when I realise - oh I've spend 10 hours on this and I absolutely hate the outcome, but I need to just remind myself that even though no one will see the final thing, the act of actually doing it will teach me things and help me learn!! Thanks for all the great advice!!

> "4. Don't go taking long breaks."
very, very painfully true.

a month and a half before, i was start trying to submit drawing weekly. at start it progressed smoothly, but then midterm came in and i stopped drawing for a week during the midterm so that i can focus studying. after the midterm however, i got artblock and just couldn't satisfied with what i draw, so 2 week passed away without submitting anything. this week i finally decided to just bring up random sketch at my sketchbook and work it, and currently still struggling to finish it.

dA definitely doesn't clear your notifications regularly, although non-Notes that are a year old (or six months, I think, for name change notifications) usually vanish.

Ahhh, shucks.Β  I'm at that social media point-- I'm trying not to buy into the "hunt for more watchers" trap, and I turned off pageviews, but I've been quietly thinking for the past year or so about why my watchers watch me and what they might want to see.Β  So I make almost no personal journals, rarely post WIPs, am careful what I say... but at the same time, I sit here "watching" a ton of people with all the notification options off, only visiting their page once a year to wish them a happy birthday.Β  And with the exception of one or two friends who are still active on dA, nobody posts comments and I only have a handful of favs, llamas, and thank-yous each week.Β  So my circumspection is not only silly, it's groundless-- but I still sit here wondering how I should act and who I should try to be.Β  Like... knowing I have a problem doesn't teach me how to fix it.Β  If that makes sense.Β  How do you just relax?Β  Where's the happy medium between professional silence and childish blathering?

Personally I just feel that 99% of my energy should be on improving my work and with the 1% I upload stuff and just post nonsense journals like these

I'm not sure about the notifications though, dA usually cuts my notifications in half when it reaches a certain number or so :/

Well to be frank.... i think GUWEIZ isnt much better than staplus....
But I think most will agree that is is not the name that has brought "watchers" to you channel but the outstanding art that you create. I can only speak for myself but I do think that people can relate when I say that you are a great artist with a great eye for beauty. I think you are capable of becoming a great "monster" among those othersΒ  .
Pave your own path. Don't get discouraged when you see those other art sites. Use what you can to improve.( if there need be )
Wish you all the best

Congratulations of the 30k!! Very well deserved!Β

Very interesting read. It's nice getting some insight from an awesome artist on the other side.
Starting digital was so frustrating in the beginning (still is at times ;^; ) since I've always done so traditionally. It's still kinda hard not to compare my own stuff to better artists out there^^ I try to focus on getting inspired by them instead.
Your work is truly amazing and you have some incredible work ethic! Looking forward to see how your art will be in the next 2 years!! (It'll probably be EVEN MORE GODLY godly levels of awesome awesomeness!!! )

All the best and more on your journey Β

Thanks! I think it's great to compare, but personally I think the important thing is to time yourself. For me, I only look at other art when I'm done for the day before bed. This way, I don't feel any unnecessary pressure or influence during the work day, but still learn stuff. β™₯

I think yours is a good speech indeed

In my own opinion you should not feel the "pressure" or the need to "please the audience".. I see many talented artists wasting their potential doing lot of stuff just to "please" the audience (usually nsfw stuff) which is somehow sad.. have fun doing what you want and what you like and I'm sure we will like it as well.

And about failures they're part of the recipe for the success so..there is no need to be ashamed of them or force you to make them good (and honestly I'd be glad to see these discarded paintings..I'm sure they would be interesting to me even whith some flaws).Β

Just wanted to thank you for sharing your thoughts anyway..If I'll ever get a decent number of whatcher I'll try to remember your advice but I'm far from it yet (<20) hahaha

Gosh thank you for the message, especially no.2 because that is the most frequent change I see on artists whenever they gain popularity, they're all so pressured to 'please' their watchers/followers to the point they lose the touch and like you said, their goals. They come to draw what the people want to see, not for themselves xD;;Β

Way to go! I'm not surprised you have so many watchers, you're a phenomenal artist!

I sometimes feel like it's depressing how few watchers I have ... but I'm already an extremely high tension person, I'm sure I would put too much pressure on myself if I had that many Of course, I'm also no where near your skill level. I just keep reminding myself its all about the practice and it doesn't matter how much low-quality-crap I churn out as long as I keep learning from it. I totally agree about getting excited when I reload my page and see new notifications though ... it's also really easy to keep up with when I normally only get a few.Β

I'm really excited to see what you put up next!
