What a wonderful portrait! Her eyes, pose and expression are so specific! The background and lighting give this portrait surrealistic feeling, just like she is from somewhere else... The story of making this portrait touched my heart... And the title is very good.

though I don't really like portraits, I really do like this one (well, it is more than just a portrait, isn't it?). There's a wonderful expression on her face, which one can't really read: sad and in some way it seems like she knows more than the viewer, like she has seen something the viewer hasn't seen. And I like that when you focus on her face, her hand vanishes and becomes a sun. love the light, love the Klimt-like ductus of her clothes, love the ambiguity of the background, love everything... and it's very seldom that I really admire a painting.

What a great comment. You couldn't have nailed it more accurately. I saw this girl for the first time from across a bar and there was the look you've described on her face, impenetrable, maybe sad, something hinting at a knowledge beyond her years.
I never, ever approach women in bars, but her eyes, dark, beautiful, I really wanted to paint them.
To my shock she agreed to it. We talked a lot during the process. As it turned out, she had a younger brother die in a car wreck less than a year before. She was very close to him and I could see that's what was causing her 'look'...pain. She had his name tattooed on her wrist, which, in the full size painting, you can see revealed where her sleeve sags down (in front of the light).
Thank you very much for your extremely perceptive comment. I think you're the first to really 'get' the essence of the painting. It really motivates me to know there are people out there who understand what they are looking at...

sorry for the late response...
what a sad story this is, but you captured that look really well! I really admire it, when somebody is able to capture such subtle emotions in a portrait. I'm not good at doing portraits myself, so all the characters in my paintings are kind of exchangable stereotypes.
And now that you've said it and I've looked closely, I believe I can see the tatoo...
