Description
As far as I can tell, these are the default colours used for the girl's in the W.I.T.C.H. comics. The charts are from 5 tutorials on "how to draw the W.I.T.C.H. girls" originally posted in the Danish W.I.T.C.H. comics magazines many years ago.
A lot of people doesn't seem to know that you actually can get the officialt colour chart values for the girls, so I thought I'd spread the love.
The reason for these charts obscurity probably is, that the original W.I.T.C.H. "how to draw" tutorials consisted of three pages for each girls with some very nice drawing tips. The first two pages are relatively wide spread among W.I.T.C.H. fan communities, as they have the actual "draw the girls" parts in them. The third page with these chart numbers are however extremely hard to find online. Basically, you have to be an experienced digital artist to understand why these "weird numbers" are worth sharing with other fans.

Well, as long as people can recognise the characters, using your own colours can't hurt. The light hair colours for Hay Lin and Taranee can for instance easily be made closer to black for internet art.

Yeh, I had actually wondered before if Hay Lin died her hair blue... or Eric... it wouldn't be that OOC for either of then.
Taranee, on the other hand, would get slapped by her mom.

Yeah, this is how I see it. ( going by cartoon )
- Eric's, Mrs.Vandom's,Matt's , and Tara's family's hair are black, but portrayed as dark blue.
- Hay Lin and her family have charcoal hair ( charcoal- a few shades lighter than black, darker than navy ) and it is portrayed as purple.
- Nerissa has black hair.... which is protraying itself....
- Taranee, who is adopted in the comics, and has a noticably lighter shade of blue hair than her parents, has blue hair as it is portrayed, and no one notices. I think of it this way for fanfiction reasons. ^^

Like said, it's a printing thing. You don't want to use pure black (or too dark values) on print. Try to notice that no large surfaces really are black in the comics.
This, of course, probably also means that Orube's hair is a lot less purple than most people seems to assume. Really, compare it to Hay Lin's. They are not *that* far apart.

Then again, in one of the specials Eric has actual blue hair... my reasoning is that black hair doesn't exist in the Witch universe
What? It *does* have animanga influences

I believe that the simplest explanation often is the easiest. The simplest here is the one about basic printing colours, and how you want to avoid using values darker than a certain point.
I once attended a workshop with the original character designing artists, where he explained the differences between the girls. I can add that he at no point said anything about blue or purple hair on two of the main characters (had this been the case, he probably would have found it worth mentioning).

Alright! Thanks for posting these; I finally finished some outlines for W.I.T.C.H. drawings and these will come in handy for coloring them.
By the way, did they ever do one for Orube?

No. D:
Before officially stopping to read the comic, I bought one more magazine purely because there was a "how to draw Orube" in it. But there weren't any colour charts in those later "second wave" of how to draw lessons. Such a pity. I'd have loved to have charts on Elyon and Orube (the first two characters in the second wave).
I would however say that Orube is relatively close to Hay Lin with her colours. Her hair is somewhat lighter while her skin is a darker, but Hay Lin's hair is a good start to get Orube's right.

How I loved W.I.T.C.H. when I was younger. I still adore the first storylines.

The first season or two was good. Got an honest fan rage when I encountered the animations the first time. X) Also my first honest ship in the 5th storyline. Only did continue reading the comics there due to the 10% of time my ship was present... Stopped reading when the poor ship sank. :/
A few years ago I was one of the few consistent online W.I.T.C.H. fanartists posting things in English communities/galleries. Never really did remove myself entirely from the fandom due to the communities I joined during those times. Sort of odd how the fandom actually has grown online. There was a time it was really small and cosy.

I used to be a part of the Danish fan-community online back when the comicseries first began. I didn't enjoy the animated series, to be honest.. and I lost interest because the story just felt forced to me in the end. Also, in the beginning, W.I.T.C.H readers were mainly 14-18 year olds, with a few 20 year-old readers too. It was a mature series, yet childish. When looking in the new magazines, the fanletters are all from 10-12 year-olds :/ this just proves how much the story went downhill, and how immature it ended up being. I had no idea the fandom was still growing, though, it's great to hear that the W.I.T.C.H. spirit is still alive, as I still enjoy reading my old magazines.

New Power seemed to be a story reboot where they had made sure to get rid of all the "older" characters before that time. The start of storyline six pretty much says it all. No Cedric, no Orube, more We incorporated into the actual story etc.
Basically they seemed to aim for new young readers, downright ignoring their older ones that had matured over the years.
I think the reason it's growing partly is, that many of the original fans from before 2005 didn't have English as their first language, and pretty much was too young to go to the English forums, then.
We were one of the really early W.I.T.C.H. countries. Years ahead of the UK, for instance.
Most of the community seem to focus on early comic seasons, fan-created stuff and the animation (With the Ludmore saga as an rule-exception due to many older fans love for the mature sidestory in that season)

I see.. Woah, you sure know your stuff! I'm impressed!
Blegh, don't mention We, that little PokΓ©mon-like creature irritates me. He's definitely just a cute sidekick to make the story more appealing to young readers, and while it's just fine to try and get a bigger audience, it's degrading to change the storyline/characters for the worse to get more readers, and that's what I think W.I.T.C.H did.
Ah, I'm glad to hear that. As I said, I also believe the first season to be the most interesting.

I bought every comic from number one and into the first couple of numbers of storyline six. It's not that hard to draw your own conclusions, then.
I originally forgave We for his existence, because they only seemed to want him as a mascot. The moment *he* seemed to get important, while the previous "mature characters" at the same time was written out, though... Not good. Like said, it seemed like they very obviously wanted to lure in an younger audience while deliberately getting rid of their older readers. Worked too... I stopped reading.

Hmm, I can't remember which issue was my last one. I stopped after the storyline with that blue haired man with the blonde son, where the son lived in his own little world but ended up being able to talk. But I was already starting to loose interest then, which explains why I can't remember their names. So yeah, it worked on me too. As I see it, getting rid of the mature readers was kicking themselves in the dignity. But if they want quantity over quality, so be it.
I bought the last issue published in Denmark, though. I wanted to see how it ended (for us Danes anyway, the series go on in other countries, I assume). I was very disappointed.. The girls were driving around in a pink van that resembled one the Totally Spies-girls would drive in way too much. Not good, not good at all. Their costumes changed again too, and started reminding me of something Winx-Club would wear.

That's the third season. The one Orube was presented in. But I don't remember their names either, but I only continued to buy due to habit and wanting to catch W.I.T.C.H. traders on Tegnebordet. The villains wasn't exactly the best. The forth actually improved, bringing back the original villains from the first. And the fifth had some really mature elements. It also had Matt acting honestly truly stupid. Sort of nice to see that sort of expected teenage stupidity from the lead love interest (he'd just learned about the girls powers, so naturally he tries to help by doing the dumbest hero-thing he could possibly do. The consequences of this pretty much carried most of the storyline).
I didn't buy anything from the Teach 2B Witch storyline you're referring to. But the costume change happened in New Power, where I bought the first issue to see the costumes. The girls got a power up (no, stupid! Never do power ups, you're making things harder for yourself with significantly stronger heroes). You know the "Matt just learned about the girls" thing I refered to? Yeah, turns out: "He knew from the start and has worked for Kandrakar all along"... Right? So, his acting like an total idiot in the fifth storylines was some sort of manipulative set-up? Or is he just even dumber than he's allowed to be? Bad retcon. Bad! This ONE New Power issue was just... Scary. So many "shark jumps" in one issue that it was hard to believe.

Ah, wait, you mean when he was caught in that book? I think I'm mixing it up.. I have the first couple of issues where he's caught in the book, THAT's when I stopped reading. Before he was released. I kinda wanna know how it ended.. but I assume it turned out fine. Another thing I've been wondering about is my favourite male character, Martin, The guy who was in love with Irma. I'm kinda guessing he was written out of the story when he hooked up with that French girl.
Augh, right, that's what it was called Teach 2B Witch. The ridiculous abbreviation just saddened me even more. It's degrading.
Matt?! Knew all along?? that sounds like a stupid last-minute plot-twist they threw in to make the story more exciting, without thinking how it'd affect the early plotline. It sounds very dumb, and yes, it makes his actions in the book-storyline even stupider.

Gwennafran In reply to Abi-R [2010-07-15 16:27:20 +0000 UTC]
That's the fifth storylines, yeah. You can probably go to Wikipedia for a summary.
Martin was pretty much forgotten, yeah. Unless later season's wrote him back in. At the least one of my favourite guys actually ended up marrying *his* gal girl in oner of the first numbers of the sixth storyline (yup, I always liked the history teacher that dates Will's mom).
My point exactly. Unless we have some grave translation mistakes, Matt has been lying to the girls for an even longer time than they did to him.
And he gets to be the girls "power mentor" in New Power at the same time. It *really* stinks of them simply not wanting to introduce another character.

Yeah, I'll probably go do that, this talk is really giving my inner W.I.T.C.H-fan a energy-boost, hahaha.. It probably won't be long before I'm uploading fanart.
I thought so.. not only did he get a new girlfriend, but he was the least attractive one. I guess there's no room for that in a perfect teen world Oooh, what was his name again.. Collins? I really liked that guy too, he seemed so nice
Now that we're talking about male WITCH characters.. Did Cornelia end up with Peter? How did it go with Taranee and Luke? Irma and the blonde spiky-hair dude? And now that Matt is "power mentor", is he still with Will..? ...Sorry for asking so much, geez.. I should go look this stuff up myself.. 8|;
I doubt it's translation mistakes I didn't like it when Will told Matt about their powers in the first place. It felt weird, having someone from the "real world" know.. But I guess that's fixed now that he actually knew all along, huh?

I'm actually a bit embarrassed that I got three W.I.T.C.H. submissions in a row on my front page right now. X)
I'm just giving my new text tutorial a day, before reading through it again, before submitting it to the wolves (also known as a W.I.T.C.H. community. Some people do not like people daring to mention canon when their OCs clearly are breaking it).
He seemed very nice indeed. And history teachers tend to be awesome.
By the time I stopped reading Taranee seemed torn between Luke and another guy amd Irma still flirted with blond guy. I really didn't get to read much further than you. I heard rumours saying that Will and Matt broke up in New Power, but I've never bothered checking up. I never was that big a Matt-fan in the first place.
