For those who have not followed this process through my scraps:OHMYGOSH GUYS, I ACTUALLY DREW THIS ONE MYSELF!!!!1!
So here's how I colored Elita. I still think she deserves better. But I did my best. I worked really hard at shaping and placing those highlights, but they still confound me. Give me uberdetail any day over simple, smooth expanses that I somehow have to find a way to bring to life!
But I'd really like to know what you think.
And any wisdom you might have on highlighting, PLEASE SHARE!!!
EDIT: Her 'BotSigil is actually a lot redder in the real thing. I'll see if I can get a better color scan once I convince my scanner that it CAN SO talk to the computer... *RAEG*
Oh -- I'd better mention, since most of you will have already spotted it, that I changed her head design a little bit. I've never liked that odd lamp-thing she has in G1. So I stole a little from Alex's Megs
rigin comic book design for her. Thanks Alex.Elita is epic, and deserves better fanart.

Wow, now that's some colouring skillz! You did it again - despite her being Pink Robot Is Pink, you somehow still avoided her being seen as a damsel in distress

Her highlights are fine, and they all correspond to each other, but her shadows are confused
Her neck and upper eyelids are dark, under the shadows of her chin and eyebrows - so the light source must be from above.
But then the tops of her shoulders are dark, as if they're in the shadow of her chest from a light source shining upwards from below her.
The most confusing things are the bulbs at the sides of her head. If the viewer's brain says "the light source is from above" then they bulge outwards - but if the viewer's brain says "the light source is from below" then they poke inwards

Nah. My processor haz Teh Tutch, and can handle it.
My only reason for making the tops of her shoulders dark was to try to make it look like they were curving around behind her -- you know how the very edges of things that curve away sometimes look darker, especially if they're shiny, since the curving-away part is no longer reflecting Spangly-Brilliance back into your eyes... But if it's not working, it's not working. And yes, her head-thingies do look a bit odd. I'm thinking I should have left the darkest shadow a bit lighter, to allow for the reflected light that would certainly be bouncing up from her torso.........

I get what you mean about making the edges seem further away, but if you did that you would have to do it for all the edges that curve away - the top of her head, the sides of her arms, and around her ear sensors
It's not that you did the image "wrong" (far from it :icong1toeglompplx: ) it's more that it's confused because it can't quite make up its mind about where Elita is being lit from

There is a knowing twinkle in her optics now that wasn't present in the inked version. She knows something and isn't telling us! Looks great, boss-bot!
