Reading through all of the comments, I believe some didn't understand because they didn't understand "rent" as meaning a tear in the night sky; yet there is a serenity.

Me myself, I've enjoyed this little jewel of yours since it was first posted (I had just gotten to know more haijin from when I entered my first WriMo in October, 2007). It's especially fitting now to have acquired DD status!

HaikuKitty In reply to Jade-Pandora [2008-08-11 03:03:01 +0000 UTC]

I am still surprised!

I bet you are right - I think the word 'rent" may have been misunderstood - but I stand by it as a valid way to see the meteors in the sky!

Thank you Jade! you are one of the best of the best!

I have been busy visiting everyone's gallery who have taken the time to fav the piece - I am seeing some amazing things on my journey.

Fantastic! I hope they are wonderful things!

As for the "rent" word, oh yes definitely stand firm on your choice because I think it was perfect!

o_o My interpretation of it is that basically stars live within the night sky, and within them are the constellations of gods and legends.

But that sounds so simple compared to others .. and I may very well be wrong. But .. good job. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HaikuKitty In reply to Naginani [2008-08-09 04:45:15 +0000 UTC]

Interpretations of poetry are never wrong - it is to you what it is to you. Everyone's life experiences are present as one reads or hears a piece and that is what colors your thoughts, emotions and feelings that the poetry may elicit. Many times as I read something, I will not understand it on a conscious level and yet tears will spring to my eyes - I "know" or "get" what it means without knowing what was meant.

Not worth a DD.. for Gosh's sakes, people; it's a scrap! and not even a 5/7/5 syllable haiku!

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

Jade-Pandora In reply to FoggyPebble [2008-08-11 02:47:17 +0000 UTC]

To be informed is to be enlightened. Here is an excerpt from "The Haiku Handbook" by William J. Higginson:

"Many Western authors have fallen into the simplistic trap of saying that the haiku is a 17-syllable poem in 3-lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. This has led to whole classrooms of teachers & children counting English syllables as they attempt to write haiku. But Japanese haiku are written in Japanese, which is quite different from English or other Western languages.
"In fact, Japanese poets do not count "syllables" at all. Rather, they count onji. The Japanese word onji does not mean "syllable", it means "sound symbol", and refers to one of the phonetic characters used in writing Japanese phonetic script."

FoggyPebble In reply to Jade-Pandora [2008-08-12 05:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Not even the Wikipedia will tell me what "sound syllables" are ._. Sorry, I dun understand, still

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jade-Pandora In reply to FoggyPebble [2008-08-12 11:52:06 +0000 UTC]

sound "symbols".

it's okay, just please understand that Loretta is a fine & respected haijin (writer of Japanese style poetry) and a lovely person as well

I didn't even know that this debate was going on within this poem.... Thank you Jade....

FoggyPebble - it is ok if you do not like this little poem of mine. I wrote it for me, and me alone - and was very surprised to see that others got it and liked it enough to be thought worthy of a DD. It is something I like to do - watch the night sky and dream... I am so happy about this being thought of as special, because every time someone adds it to their favorites, I am back in the field where I wrote it - gazing at the stars and seeing the meteors and thinking of the black sky as a giant, holey, holy tent protecting us..... It makes me happy to be back in that place and time.

to you and thank you for having the courage to stand up for what you believe, I do not mind your feelings about it.

how long did you think about it after you read it? hmmm?

besides it's poetry, there aren't any set rules. Lighten up there and enjoy it for what it is, even if it is a scrap.

muffinmonkey [2008-08-09 02:08:35 +0000 UTC]

very nice
has so much more meaning than just the words
The words don't make that much sense, I'll be the first to say it. But somehow, that's not the point, the very nature, maybe even the shape creates a concept far beyond what is obvious.
Very serene

I like Haiku
