the shamans of Peru believe the night sky is a tent overhead, and the stars that shine are holes. This has caught my imagination and will not let go.

I like it, the first part strikes me as how meteors take up an allocated amount of space amongst space, in which case you've described space like a medium made of black nylon - and so meteors (and other celestial bodies) rent a certain degree of black nylon (space) to allocate themselves. The second is like how celestial bodies have, throughout human history, been compared to all kinds of gods. So these meteors renting black nylon and falling from the sky (and all throughout space) are like celestial gods slipping through it (space/the black nylon) as the meteors.

Congrats on your DD! I've loved this piece from the moment it was first suggested to *TheFavoritesProject by ~Synith and have been rooting for it ever since.

I love the subtlety of the message, the correlation between "nylon" and "slipping in" being so clever. I suppose this really isn't a haiku, format wise, but your username having the word "haiku" in it will probably make people view it as such. I just think that it is a truly awesome poem!

HaikuKitty In reply to PunknEra [2008-08-09 05:12:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the support!!! You have no idea how much I have been smiling today!!! I had to go to work for the 26th day in a row just 20 minutes after finding out this piece was chosen for a DD, and I have to say, my coworkers were suspicious of my bright, cheery smile and my happy-go-lucky attitude about being there! I really needed a pick me up, and this fit the bill very nicely.

Just a bit of trivia - I chose the name HaikuKitty because I was going for a pun of "Hi, kool kitty." I can't resist a punny pun! *groan*

FlubberWubber In reply to ??? [2008-08-08 07:45:28 +0000 UTC]

This is amazing. It is in some ways completely nonsensical but it is so amazingly powerful at the same time because of the incredible word choice and usage. This captures everything I think a haiku poem means and can possible be. I was taught once that to make a poem different from other writing it must have a ring at the end that spirals into the air and leaves the reader with an, ahh, type of feeling. I felt that with this poem. Wonderful job.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HaikuKitty In reply to FlubberWubber [2008-08-09 05:20:13 +0000 UTC]

I am so glad that you felt the "ahh" feeling. So many times, I read a poem I do not understand and yet it leaves me feeling breathless or teary eyed, and I KNOW I understand it on some level that is not in my thinking mind. I am so happy it sings to you. Thank you for getting it. Your comment means a lot to me.

Iscariot-Priest In reply to ??? [2008-08-08 07:36:31 +0000 UTC]

The way I read it, rather literally, the meteors rent the sky as dresses for the gods.
What did you mean to say.

BTW, Kitty, now it's been DD'ed, maybe give it the honor of being a full blown deviation

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HaikuKitty In reply to Iscariot-Priest [2008-08-09 05:32:10 +0000 UTC]

Your meaning is very beautiful, thank you for sharing. It puts it into a whole new realm that I did not even intend, which is the beauty of the spoken and written word when used for meaning and symbolism to mark our lives.

When I wrote this, I was looking up at the sky and thinking about how some shamans see the night sky as a tent with the shine of the stars as holes in need of patching that allow the sun to sneak in. I watched a falling star and then I imagined a large knife cutting the nylon, the renting of garments being a strong image in my mind that conveyed the quickness of the instant. I am drawn back to that night when I read this again in a very forceful way. So few words, so much feeling remembered, this is why the challenge of haiku, tanka and senyru make me try.

I moved this to scraps because it was a miscat - and when I tried to put it into visual poetry today, it would not take it. I think I need to change the file to .png to get it to stick. So I will move it back when I get that done. Thank you for the smile and the added depth...
