Varia is the youngest child and sole daughter of the Shi-Nyuon clan, having 5 older brothers and staying with her father Rondho Shi-Nyuon. A shy and introverted girl, she is also somewhat childish for her age, and has a habit of wiggling her toes unconsciously depending on her mood, a trait picked up from her mother.
As a small child, Varia was happy and cheerful, but became more and more withdrawn after her parents divorced. Her father has since imposed (outdated) vlieganan traditions on her which restricts her lifestyle due to her gender.
During middle school, she became a target of various bullies, but she met and befriended Naurue due to similar circumstances with their parents. Varia and Naurue became close friends and even attended the same high school; in reality, Varia fell in love with her for her more carefree and upbeat outlook on life.
