I would go with Maya myself. Max is really a great piece of software yes, but Maya comes with all the bells & whistle plug-ins already in the stock Maya Unlimited. With Max, you have to buy the plug-ins, which are very expensive.
Maya's UI is also much smoother to navigate once you get past the learning curve. But hey, that's just one CGI illustrators opinions.
As far as your GI rigging, does Max come with a GI renderer in the stock program? Maya comes with Mental Ray, which is a very solid GI renderer.
Nice HDRI imaging by the way.

Actually max also has MentalRay included with it, just that I don't use it. I use VRay, one of the best free GI renderers I've seen, and easy to setup too. Not to mention the render times aren't bad either.
Although you personally use Maya, I prefer to go with max for several reasons. It's the most widely used, easiest 3D program to learn and pickup fast. (For me anyways) I've looked at Maya before (my cousin has it) but the interface is just too confusing for me. And who ever said that you have to buy all the plugins? There's tons of free ones out there, and there's always a way to work around things without plugins, although hectic and time consuming. Just adds to the learning experience I guess. Besides that, I've only seen the best of 3D modelers really use Maya. I don't consider myself that good at all, just starting to, and I prefer to master at one program than learn two at once or before I start learning another. Don't mean to sound offensive or anything, just stating my opinion.

That's just ridiculously realistic. I often find that most of this sort of thing looks really bad at the edges, but on this youve really cracked it. I have no idea how you managed to make it look quite so good. I love the colours and the reflections, kind of strange and futuristic. What exactly is it anyway? Cant think of anything bad to say..

All it is really is a futuristic weapon that I'm working on. It was supposed to be implemented into a computer game in development, but that might be going down the drain now; everyone is starting to leave the project and what not. Never the less, I will still finish it.
Also, if you're familiar with max at all, the only real reason why it looks so smooth (not to mention the high polycount) is that there's a modifier called the meshsmooth modifier. All it does is adds polygons around the model to smooth it out more. works really well. The rest of it is just max materials with HDRI images.
Thanks for commenting though.

It's actually one of the most widely used 3D software out there. The only problem is, it's also the most expensive. About $3,500 for the full version. However, if you're looking for plugins, tutorials, renderers, chances are most of them will be for 3dsmax and most companies look for people who have experience with this software. If you want to check out their products, head out to [link]
Or if you want to try their "free" version, gmax, go here: [link] It's pretty much the same as 3dsmax, just that there's less features, and is used more for gaming purposes, modding, etc. Most of the modifiers are there I believe. The only real problem with gmax, I'm not aware of any possible way to render with it. If you search around a bit, I'm sure there's something out there. Good luck.
