Description
Halo Galactic MapThis piece took me almost 2 days to complete after a week of research and reading. No one has yet produced a map such as this before for the Halo Universe, and I just wanted to open the door. Plans are in the works for a higher resolution image as well as a flash application. This project could not have been accomplished if it weren't for my friends over at Halopedia.com [link] and of course those crazy cats over at Bungie [link]
A lot of what I did here was think. I thought about where certain places would be in the scale of things and also, using my above average knowledge of where certain markers are in the actual Milky Way, I was able to put certain places - like Reach and Harvest - in an accurate position.
This is a growing piece and I would HOPE that if you have any conflict with this image you would post up your source. I would be more than happy to adjust places if I were proven wrong

I will not be updating this version of the map. This is a piece I like and am going to keep the same. The next gen will be more "accurate" - according to some people its not perfectly accurate with their findings. Updates will be sent out.

The foundation has been "broken" on the updated Haloverse Galactic Map.
For further discussion on this and the next upcoming project please view the thread here - [link]
Thank you! Enjoy!

A couple of thoughts: The border style is pretty slick, it reminds me of a project of my own I've been putting off. The place tags get rather busy, though I'm not sure how to fix that. Smaller font maybe?
I have to echo the scale commentary though. As noted, Reach is given a real location, of a star we know the location of quite solidly. Epsilon Eridani is 10.5 LY away from earth, which on a map of the whole galaxy at this scale is going to be about the same pixel. I very, very much doubt that the events of the Halo stories take up a significant fraction of the galaxy.
I would, however, be curious to know what data you used to place your locations.

Like I posted in the comments, I used Halopedia and Bungie - as well as my own reading.
I know EVERYONE is on me about distances... and I will get to that. I can change them easily, when I have time to change them

The map is way off. Its only about 10 light years from Earth to Reach, but you've put it as closer to 13 KILOlight-years. That means its about(ish) 10,000-13,000 light years away. In actual fact, UNSC territory is probably half to one quater the size of your 'inner colony' section. Other inaccuracies are kinda weird. Reach is the closest colony to Earth, not Mamore or Ballast, and in the books there were only 17 colonies.
Uh, overall, I think the factions in Halo only control a very small segment of the galaxy, from waht i understand. But aside from that, I will admit, its VERY pretty =3

O_o you have sources on this? 'cause there are WAY more than 17 colonies. Check your facts before your write a paragraph synopsis of something.

The milky way galaxy is some 100,000 ly across. The Epsilon Eridani System, which you may know as Reach (w00t go books having actual star names for places) is only 10.5 ly away from Earth. Your map needs editing on that much at least. Otherwise it is pretty, I will give you that.

Well so you know Reach, or rather its star system, is closer to the Galactic Center than Earth is. Obviously not by much (when you really compare distances), but it is.

Very cool! It's nice to see the distances between the places in the games and books, gives it that sense of depth for sure

Its just my interpretation of the data, there are some holes and off-distances, but I tried to make it as best to scale as I could.

You sent this to Urk?

I sent it to urk, but that doesn't mean he read it yet. Not that I'm counting on it. I made it for us!

I think that looks pretty cool. But what are your sources of the actual locations of ie. Covenant worlds? Or did you just make up the most of them? And human space looks far larger than it's actually supposed to be. I think most of the star systems in human space are only approx. 30 lightyears away from Sol. Distances like those on your map, which look like tens of thousands lightyears, would take decades to traverse with human slipspace technology.
And, by the way: This isn't the first take on mapping the halo universe. Take a look at this map: [link]
Also, take a look at this real galaxy map. It should put things to some perspective. [link]

Awesome, very awesome.
Looking forward to the flash version.
Only thought would be that maybe our solar system should be detailed a bit more, i'm sure there was a mention of mars in the fiction.

There was, but only as a homeworld for a character in the up and coming Halo 3: ODST game.

Have you thought about the locations of the other halos? I also notice that most colonies are around the outer part of the galaxy. Do you think there is much life near the center.

That said, I have some problems. The Pillar of Autumn managed to get from Reach to Installation 04 in twenty days, at 2.1ly/day. According to this map, the two would be tens of thousands of light-years apart. I suspect you need to adjust your scaling, heavily.
That doesn't stop it being absolutely beautiful, though.

I see your point, but you have to assume that distances in "slipspace" are meaningless when compared to normal space. This isn't 100%, and I never claimed it to be.

Igili In reply to Halcylon [2009-06-04 22:28:22 +0000 UTC]
Sorry to clarify again, but the 2.1 LY is referring to the distance in normal space, not slipspace. The distance in slipspace is irrelevant at that point. The 2.1 LY/day just means the distance in normal space, traversed in one day.
And yeah. If this was 100% accurate, all of the locations on the map would fit approximately to an area the size of the inner colonies on your map, if not smaller. But it's your map, do what you want with it.

You know what I just noticed? In the key, you don't have a notation for Unggoy controlled space. And that's the bright pink part. Just pointing that out and if was intentional then nevermind! :]
